Osteoporosis treatment
My osteoporosis has gotten out of hand. In February 2022, I suffered five compression fractures (L1-L-5) and in November, three more (T-10- T-12). Each time I spent 10 to 12 weeks in excruciating pain.
My endocrinologist has suggested starting me on Tymlos for 2 years, and then moving on to Prolia. Has anybody used this medication (Tymlos)? How was your experience?

I agree. I don't know about @maritss but in my case, my health insurance will not cover bone density scans more frequently than every 2 years.
If it is important to you, a DEXA can be obtained without insursnce. It seems the aversge cost throughout the country is around $150. Might be worth it for peace of mind.
Thank you - yes, lets hope!!
This is under the Norwegian public healthcare, overloaded of this type of scanning - that is why. But I will try again after 1-2 years and possibly pay for a scan if it still is not possible through the normal healthcare system. For all the public healthcare one pay a maximum of ca 3000 NOK = ca 300 dollars pr year. All excess treatment is free. It works normally very well!
Do you mind sharing your T-score before having all of these fractures? I’m trying to decide what I need to do as far as taking meds or not. Sorry that you’ve had to endure such pain.
I hadn't had a Dexa before the fractures. My first scan was just after the February 2022 fractures. I spent months trying to get an appointment with an endocrinologist (specialist doctors are scarce in Puerto Rico and endocrinologists, are in incredibly high demand).
I finally got an appointment in the Endocrinology Residency Program at the University of Puerto Rico's School of Medicine. Still, before they decided to prescribe Tymlos, they ran about every test in the book, looking for a plausible explanation for such an advanced bone demineralization at 62.
I have always exercised and taken supplements and blood work has always been normal. My osteoporosis has worsened and now I am a T- score of -4.6 in my spine. I am planning to start on Evenity. The side effects sounds awful but I like the thought of a dual action of bone building and to slow any bone loss.
Can you tell me how long you have been on Evenity and if you have had any side effects ? My endocrine md wants me to start this and I was approved.
Hello,
I’m just joining this thread. I’ve been on Evenity for 3 months. I am beginning to see a pattern regarding side effects which is that a day or two after the injections, I am really tired. This goes away by the next day, so it’s nothing I can’t handle.
It’s interesting that when we talk about side effects, we only speak of the ones we ‘experience’. Of course, there could be side effects that are not noticeable such as negative effects on the immune system.
Still, I have chosen to take this drug and probably a bifosphonate after Evenity.
I’m going to trust the system. 🙂
I had to stop taking Evenity after the 5th dose. As I stated on another blog " My Experience on Evenity for treating Osteoporosis". My side effects in the beginning were manageable: headache, tiredness a little brain fog. But after the fourth dose I started having lower back pain, my BP starting getting higher and I started getting palpitations. My MD didn't seem concerned. After the fifth dose my palpitations were keeping me up at night and I got scared. I am a healthy 62 year old with no other health issues besides OP. I stopped on my own. I am still dealing with the palpitations unfortunately. I recently went to another MD an Endocrinologist this time, she truly listened to my concerns and stated I needed to be on a bisphosphonate to " lock in" any gains I got from taking the Evenity. My DEXA scan had no improvement at all but she felt that I needed a short term (12 month) course of a medication. I choose to go on Fosamax instead of Reclast. Everyone is unique in their journey with OP so I encourage you to do your research and get educated on the benefits/side effects possible with this medication. I also encourage you to get the book " Great Bones" by R Keith McCormick, excellent book with a lot of information and knowledge by the author who also has OP. Good luck with your decision, you have a lot of support on this site.
