What do you do for Neuropathy itch?

Good morning everyone. I am desperately in need of help with what is called Neuropathy itch. I have SFN (small fiber neuropathy) and am a medical cannabis user for pain. I don't know what to use for this itching. It appears that it reaches through several skin layers. No matter how much you scratch you make it worse, not better. Once you start itching, it's over....your are stuck scratching.

Have you tried certain baths? Oatmeal? I have a steroid cream called Triamcinolone Acetonide. Not exactly a wonder drug. Is there a better one?

The itching results in a terrible level of anxiety. I try to run away from it and cannot. It reminds me of summer in Minnesota when the mosquitoes launch their attacks. I am female with "O" negative blood which they just devour.

Even if you have a solution for other than neuropathy, please share and I will happily do the research. The stress of isolated living and a form of depression that is about our global community also creeps in.

The only thing that works right now for food is gelato.......Salted caramel, if you please. I hope you are all well and blessed with good health today.
Chris

I had severe itching, and my dermatologist ordered low dose Naltrexone. It was like a miracle, and worked in days.

I have had this itch for the past seven or eight years. It happens on the bottom of one foot or the other, never both at the same time, and can last anywhere from three or four minutes to over an hour. It usually strikes in thew seconds ae middle of the night, but also occasionally in the day. It is very intense, coming in waves every few seconds before abating (that is assuming I can keep my hands off the affected foot, which is impossible when it's really intense). I have been to my family doctor three time about this, and he finally concluded that it must be eczema, and gave me a cream for eczema. This itch seems to come and go at will, and can be gone (or dorment) for a few months at a time. The bottom of my feet are perfectly healthy looking btw, even when the itch is happening. I do not have eczema.
A few years back, I saw a commercial for Dr-Ho's Pain Therapy Circulation Promoter and bought one. It sends electrical pulses about every two seconds between the pads you stick to your body and can give quite the uncomfortable buzz, considering it runs on only two triple A batteries. It is not a cure, sadly, but it does completely stop my itch while it's zapping me. I have on occasion got up in the middle of the night, put it on the offending foot, and went back to bed. It is as if the electrical buzzing of the gizmo somehow intercepts the affected nerves before they can fire up. I feel somewhat self-conscious mentioning the product and have to stress I am not in any way associated with this company. I will point out that I doubt this will work on something like an itch from poison ivy (which I have been afflicted with on more than one occasion). That kind of itch is a skin condition (at least my doctor knows how to handle that). Hope this helps someone.

I have been experiencing a red burning inch on my sacrum ever since I fainted and sustained both lumbar and vertebral compression fractures in January as a result of osteoporosis. Ice provides some relief but has gotten worse. Have not seen a neurologist but no doctor so far has any remedy. Tried anti itch oatmeal crème and herbal salve but no relief. Any over the counter remedy would be appreciated.

I had the same experience with naltrexone e.g. it stopped my urge to scratch immediately, skin, itching, scratching, literally disappeared 100% for about one month, then the problem came "roaring back" and Naltrexone had virtually no affect thereafter ??

My doctor prescribed Gabapentin for anxiety but I feel it has helped my itchy skin as well.

I’m sorry to hear that! Guess I was fortunate that mine never came back.

Started with PCP, then a dermatologist, then a second. Took about 15 months. Cortisone shots, steroids, creams, lotions, special formulary products, biopsy - nothing helped. It was the 2nd dermatologist who put me on Doxepin and that took care of the problem. It's twice a day, everyday, but it works. Anyone who has had neuropathic itch knows how deliberating it can be. I'm just thankful we found a treatment that works.

Minnetonka’s have been a life saver for me. The fluffy ones. Along with the itching, my feet and ankles get ice cold. These have improved my symptoms so much.

My favorite symptom checker website is https://symptomchecker.isabelhealthcare.com/suggest_diagnoses_advanced/landing_page. You enter your symptoms and then go down the list and see what it says. You use regular layman’s terms.

I clicked on the checker website and message comes up that it does not exist.
