Depression and Anxiety at an older age

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Sep 14, 2018

I am a 70 year old woman who has had depression and anxiety for a long time. It got worse 3 years ago when my husband lost one of his jobs. I panicked and my anxiety increased. I was afraid to do things. like driving. I have arthritis pretty bad and foot problems. I'm a Christian and my faith has helped me. My husband was a pastor and our church closed 3 months ago. We've had continual stress. Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself during the day. I've gotten help from several doctors, including a psychiatrist. I also have IBS. I am better. I'm taking trazadone duloxetine, remeron and xanax. Also on osteo biflex, probiotic , bentyl and celebrex. I want to get on Sam e but it may interact with one of my meds. Thanks for listening.

I am 87 years old and have been treated for it with different meds for 45 years now. Lately I am really very depressed although on both Duloxitine and Buproprian. Because of my age and health, I recently moved 90 miles from my home to live with my son and daughter-in-law which means I no longer see any of the few friends I still have. I’ve also given up driving because I have a poor sense of direction and I’m no longer in a familiar area. I now live in a rural area meaning doctors are quite distant. I see 4 doctors, each every 3 months. I have to rely on my son to take me to my appointments. He never complains, but he has things to do and his own responsibilities. Therefore, I don’t want to impose on him anymore than I already am. I think I need to see a psychiatrist because my meds may need to be changed and I could also use some talk therapy. As one of my doctors can only be seen via a tv visit as there isn’t any one of that specialty in this area, I’m afraid it will be the same.
Because of my numerous health problems, my previous primary doctor knew of my depression. But I’m afraid my new primary will think I’m just imaginating another ailment although he does have my records of the last 15 years. I’m at a loss of what to do.

@8ea Good morning.
You've gone through some major milestones and upheavals recently. Life stages change and interchange.
I'm sure that when your son didn't drive yet, you were hauling him around from band practice to movies to friends and everywhere in between.
Seasons change as well as reasons..."Turn, turn, turn...🎶"
Find some resources in your town that will help you with gaining independence. Start with the internet or the library.
Parks and Rec, public transportation, AND the library offer all kinds of services. You'll discover lots out there to fulfill your needs. And rely on your son. He relied on you and you taught him well.

As a man who is in 80th year (Note that I didn't say I'm 79 -- like the school kid who completed her 6th grade would say: I'm in 7th grade, I am quite happy to up the number my age, with no negative associations At ALL) I rarely see doctor, take no meds or have tests done, But I am able to climb 14 floors in my apartment stairwell, walk each day at least half hour and do strength flexibility and balance exercises every day. I eat close to no meat, mostly plant based balanced food, all for a cost of within 10$ a day. (I bought 15 lbs potatoes for 4$ for my carbs, always buy on-sale) I get up each day to First find out How to find friends. The current Surgeon General says healthy social connections are essential for health both physical and mental. I know I still have no social contacts, but it only spurs me to dedicate more effort...IF not now, when? I sleep well knowing I spent my day on what's most important for me. I'd a bad one day anxiety attack, but no depression ever. There are many who are worse of...think of rhose in Sudan, Syria, South America, and Asia. So I'm grateful and allow some PLAY, physical and mental, each day in my life. Lifestyle helps most to stave off most diseases and disabilities. I hope you find it encouraging. Good luck!

Hello Sisyphus.
I should print up your post and tape it to my bedroom wall so I see it every morning.
Your great attitude would help all of us to roll that rock up the hill again every day!

@sisyphus Wow, you’re doing great! My mother lived to be 99 and didn’t stop quilting until she was 96! I like the suggestions you’ve been given here, especially those by @audriana. You can also check for senior centers in your area. There are always activities going on.
Will you ask your son if he can help you do some exploring? Then, tell me what you find out!

I am new and am dealing with depression, anxieties and other health issues. Feeling like I should not be here. I am on antidepressants but still am really down and dealing with anxieties. Effexor is one of my medications, but I think I am having health issues with it. How do I really know?

I am so so sorry you are having these issues. Most do not understand the pain and anxiety we are face with. My mind was unable to shut down thoughts ran thru my mind rapidly never at peace. I went off antidepression pi;=ll and have been on large dose of Buspar for anxiety plus xanax after 3 weeks I ave seen a results...not there yet but one day at a time my friend.

It's hard to look ahead. Try to help someone else 🙂

I agree about trying to help someone else. I volunteer at a food basket once a week for a few hours. Seeing some of those clients gives me good perspective on the blessings in my own life.

So hard at an older age to keep a positive attitude but it can be done. And I totally agree - it is hard to focus on your own feelings/problems when you are focusing on others. Good for you! Volunteering for others is the right path!

I am sorry you are suffering. I do understand long term depression. It sounds like your doctor has you on a good plan with your meds. I would stick to this for a couple months to see if it will truly help. No medicine can help us without a good trial. I have head of Sam E but it does interact with my duloxetine so I do not take it. I use a Happy Light everyday while I eat breakfast or lunch. You can google that. It is an intense light that is nothing like the light bulbs used around the house. Google Bright Light Therapy. I spent $45.00 on one, and it has been the best investment in my health. Public Libraries also have ones you can check out, to give it a try.
