Is there a hospital or Dr in US who understand metal allergies in TKR?
I have posted before long story short I have had two TKR on my right knee 2 years ago. Revision 6 month later glue did not bond. 24/7 pain whole leg/ knee down to foot never get relief just some days worse than others if I have been on it for long periods. I have found I am allergic to nickel and chromium both in my implant. No Dr understand and will not take out. I need to find someone. I prayed Mayo would be my answer but still waiting to hear if they will see me. My husband asked if I had to loose my leg would I. Some days I do not know if I can go on. I was an active 55 year who loved to bike and walk miles and very optimistic person. I can not even think about biking I will walk but not far.
Any recommendations or help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I did an online search and found this article for you. (To find this article, put the title into a search engine, click on the PubMed link result and read the free full text.):
Zondervan, R.L., Vaux, J.J., Blackmer, M.J. et al. Improved outcomes in patients with positive metal sensitivity following revision total knee arthroplasty. J Orthop Surg Res 14, 182 (2019).
The purpose of this study was to determine whether patients presenting with a painful total knee arthroplasty with a positive metal sensitivity have improved outcomes following revision to a hypoallergenic implant. The good news is that following a revision procedure to a hypoallergenic implant, these patients had improved pain scores, walking function, and range of motion.
As best as I could find, the authors of this study now have these medical affiliations:
- Jonathan J. Vaux, Joint Preservation and Reconstruction Clinic at St Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. Phone: 208-302-3500
- Michael J. Blackmer, Hip, Knee and Shoulder Joint Replacement Specialist in Foley, Alabama. Phone: 251-476-5050
- Brett G. Brazier, Orthopedic Surgery Specialist at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in Santa Rosa, California. Phone: 877-465-1856
- Charles J. Taunt Jr, Michigan Orthopedic Center in Lansing, Michigan. Phone: 517-267-0200
I hope this information is helpful and wish you all the best with getting successful treatment.
Thank you so much for your help ! My allergist who recently diagnosed me with these allergies has been trying to find a Dr who understands and what you just shared is amazing !! You are an angel for taking time to help me! I can not thank you enough!! I am surprised no on at mayo has experience with this. I had hoped so!
thank you!!!!!!
@moprea I understand. I have sensitivities to metals that I have experienced from dental work and from titanium plates when I broke my ankle. Fortunately, I was later able to have those materials removed from my body.
The Environmental Health Center Dallas is the practice of a doctor who started the field of environmental medicine. Here is their page on treatment for implant sensitivities. They may also have books on the subject. They treat the immune responses for people with implants.

Thank you so much Jennifer! I appreciate anything any one can share with me. You are angel to share!!
Thank you!!!
Jennifer I heard from the intake nurse yesterday!! If this can work I will be forever grateful for you!! Thank you so much for sending! I will keep you updated!
I had TKR two years ago. My doctor would not operate if I had a metal allergy unless I went for metal allergy testing. I knew that I had some sensitivity to metal because if I bought cheap earrings, my ears would itch and swell. When I told him this, he sent me for metal allergy testing in Framingham MA (forget the name of the allergist)! I came out very high with an allergy to nickel, along with a few other metals. My orthopedic surgeon’s name is Dr James Bono and he is at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston MA. He used a knee replacement for me made by “Smith and Nephew”. MaryAnn from MA
@moprea I had discussed my concerns of metal sensitivity with my doctor who was an environmental medicine doctor when I needed spine surgery. He told me about the practice in Texas, and that if I had to have internal hardware and had issues, there were treatments for it. I was able to have a spine fusion without hardware. When I broke my ankle, I couldn't avoid it, and I had pain and hives for months. I had to stay on antihistamines all the time until I was able to have the titanium plates removed. It's an alloy and has some other metals in it. I did have problems with pierced earrings long ago and had to give that up. Are you making plans to go to Texas?
Thank you Mary Ann! all you angels from around the country helping so much!! I have appointment in June with a Dr at John Hopkins to review this might check on your Dr
I also spoke with nurse at the Dr in Dallas that Jennifer mentioned yesterday. I have turned in all my paperwork and waiting to hear.
Jennifer I filled out all the paperwork last night it took about 3 hours but so very interesting all the questions .
I am supposed to talk with Sue the intake nurse later today.
Hoping we can do a tele health call first to discuss and then if all good I will go. Funny you say pierced earrings issue. I had when I was younger and I have always only worn 14 k since. no problems.
I so wish Dr's would test before surgeries
I honestly did not know to even ask about it.
I will keep you posted
Thank you!
Jennifer I spoke with Dr Seymour in Dallas for over an hour. I am headed to Dallas next week to work with her and have more metal testing done. She is thinking she can help me. She also wants me to see Dr at John Hopkins on June 5th to 100% rule out any structural thing.
I thank you sooooooo much for your advice on her!! The first Dr I feel like really listening to my pain.
Bless you!
