I have had the same thing and so have many others. Same exact process bloodwork scans xrays even a hip aspiration nothing. All good. To compound the problem in trying to seek for an answer the clinic I was going to really had staff problems and I unfortunately have worked in this field my whole working life starting in nursing.. the care was very concerning for my own urgency and bone health I decided not to go back. I have sought out another physician that has a great deal of knowledge about the prosthesis. I fear I may have to have a revision. They make one with more stem end flexibility. Sometimes the prosthesis is not a good fit and you get 'end of stem pain in the thigh. I had to look all of this up myself. The other poss problem is that because the prosthesis will absorb the impact of walking etc. Your own bones do not continue to regenerate they call it 'stress shielding'. At any rate I have an appt next week let you know how I feel after that. My thigh pain comes and goes. Today I can walk. Tomorrow? Who knows. Walking sitting standing weight bearing on that leg will put me back in bed.the only comfortable place. Even sitting in the recliner or on the couch for 15 min will illicit pain when I get up. I worked really hard after being sick not just w my hip to get healthy and active again. I have lost weight new meal plan on keto anti inflammatory diet. But now I cant work out I have tried after pt in off and home. So bummed...have hope I will check back after next wk. My surgery was July 2017. I have always experienced this pain intermittently and told my doc. I also have severe groin pain when it kicks up....I am in tears sometimes when it cramps up. Hang in there folks. Pain is not normal and we arent all crazy. There has to be an answer and a solution.
I’ve been away tending to a death in the family and unable to post. I’ve had to look all this up myself too. It’s a real thing but I felt alone because no one validated what I was suffering until I found a new orthopedic surgeon who is acknowledging it and s willing to do a revision. It’s a nightmare. I am SO reluctant to undergo a revision, although I know I have to :(. It will be two years in August from my surgery but I can’t walk very far without feeling like I have a knife stabbing me in the thigh. I’m worse than before the THA. Much more needs to be known about this, I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating. Surgeons need to get this out in the open and warn us of this particular potential complication. My thoughts are with all of you who are experiencing this thigh pain.

@katrine, no problem on making a mistake of where you posted. You posted your messages to the discussion titled, "Has anyone had sharp thigh pain after hip replacement?" There are members talking about end of stem pain in this discussion as well.
Day 40..Saw surgeon at day 31 and he is confident my hump/hematoma will clear. I forgot to ask how long this will take because 9 days later, it’s still the same, feels like a water balloon, not red, incision looks great. But it hurts to sit..Other than that, I’m walking and moving around just fine with no limp or assistance. Has anyone else experi need this lingering swelling?

Hi @lucas1954 - Have you tried arnica cream or gel? Someone on another thread recommended it for bruising. Your swelling sounds way beyond a bruise, but I'm wondering if the arnica might help? Just a thought. Wishing you the best. I know its a pain to have this kind of lingering discomfort.

I too have upper thigh pain after my THR one year ago. My last post on my condition was Dec. 11, 2018. My surgeon (now recently retired) kept saying that “x-rays look good, just keep up the PT”. Well, my new Ortho doc has taken my situation a little more seriously. He scheduled a CT Scan and an aspiration. Aspiration results were negative (no infection, thank God). The CT Scan showed that the stem and ball prostheses look good and bonding well to the femur, BUT there was a 8mm gap at one point where the socket prosthesis should be bonding to the pelvis. Result: a new operation (partial HR) to replace the socket prosthesis (only) is scheduled for October. Anyone else have something similar?
Yes and excruciating pain from muscle cramps going from my knee up into my groin. Didn’t happen with my right hip replacement but with my left 6 months ago I’ve had them repeatedly!
So I posted quite a while back about horrible thigh pain, popping, stiffness etc. I had a THR 5/2018 and I have had problems since 8/2018. Ive used a cane since 2018 and sometimes a walker. I’ve jumped through every hoop imaginable including 2 tendon injections , MRIs, bone scan etc. I’ve had numerous xrays of my hip in the ortho office. The best ortho surgeon in the area who did my surgery sees nothing on any of the imaging studies. Tomorrow morning I am having a hip revision with another surgeon after months and months of waiting to get and appointment and 1 Xray in his office because the bone never bonded to the stem. All this to say get a second opinion after what you believe is a reasonable time to recover from any surgery if you are having continued pain and seem to be worse than before you had the THR. You are not crazy!

Good luck with your revision ! My thoughts and prayers go with you. When you have recuperated, please let us know if (1) surgeon uses a different stem from original and (2) is entire hip being revised or just the stem ? Take good care. I am probably having a revision surgery sometime after August 2019 with a different surgeon. I’ve suffered this “enigmatic thigh pain” for almost two years now. It’s real and it’s awful.

P.S. I am referring to end of stem thigh pain after a total hip replacement. Did I post this in the correct place? Sorry if I made a mistake.

Good luck to you. No one should have continued pain after surgery was to have corrected it.
