@zita199 I mentioned this to my sister before, it was her husband who had the THR. They are walkers and he was back walking in an amazingly short amount of time. He does not carry any extra weight so I think that may have helped in his recovery. It really was the best thing he has done for himself.

Yes I have the sharp pain in my left thigh that you are talking about. I too wished I knew what it was. It is unclear. I am coming up to 1 year on my left hip replacement in July. I just had my right hip replaced in May 2018. My left hip pain started right away. I just thought it was normal but I know it is not because my right hip has no pain what's so ever. The pain I feel is a jolt or a shock in my left thigh daily. If anyone knows what it is please tell me, because I want to know what I can do on my end to fix it. It is so annoying. I had both of my hips replaced at Mayo in Rochester,MN. I have Dr Robert Trousdale as my surgeon. He had done previous surgeries on my hips called PAO'S- Peri aceatabular Osteotomy. Not sure if that is the right spelling. In my eyes he is the best. I hope someone can give me some answers. Thanks
I am actually surprised that this is so prevalent. And saddened as well. I had a left partial hip replacement 2 years ago and have had this thigh and groin pain since the surgery. I am in the process of finding out the cause. Pretty sure it's not an infection now. Next step MRI in the hopes it shows something. I will post if anything sounds possible. I would like to share my steps so far. Xray of placement no change Bloodwork to ID poss. infection slightly elevated , nuclear med scan of hip and part of thigh, 2nd nuclear scan of thigh and pelvis. Bone scan. Arthrocentesis which where they aspirate from the joint to determine infection. Now an MRIwhich could take forever to get scheduled. Please share if anything has helped other than resting it. I am on a muscle relaxant and medical mj as I can't take pain meds. Until my next appointment and a diagnosis...

Thanks Pam. I have had lots of X-rays and am getting a MRI in August. Pain sounds similar, have had it since June,2015. I Take cannibus also, gabapentine and tramadol.
Has ANYONE figured out what is causing their sharp thigh pain post hip replacement? I had a trhr a year ago due to my femor head collapsing from AVN. The pain prior was everywhere. In my groin / hip joint / down my whole leg. Now I'm not sure if this pain has been going on since before or after the replacement but it seems like after. It is soooo sharp and severe it about doubles me over. It sometimes in my groin area and sometime in the middle of the front of my thigh. Sometimes I'll even feel it off to the side of my thigh. It's very random. Sometimes it will last for weeks and sometimes days and sometimes it will hit me a few times a day. I have even felt it going from a sitting down and leaning forward to sitting up. I have had x rays, and mri's and the doctors can't figure it out.

This sharp thigh pain is more prevalent than I first thought. Sometimes time with regular walking helps. Some medical doctors speculate Fosamax can help over time. It seems that if time does not cure it, that is 1-2 years depending on who you talk to or what you read, the only option is further surgery. One surgical option is to approach it directly at the end of the stem and stabilize the stem, the other option is a complete revision. I will be at the 2 year mark in August but am SO reluctant to undergo more invasive surgery. I still have this thigh pain yet no loosening or infection. It’s distressing to say the least. I wish my original surgeon had told me about this particular possible outcome because I doubt I would have agreed to it. You can imagine that this micro motion of a metal stem in one’s body would of course cause pain with movement and no meds or exercise seem to help it. More should be known and discussed about this topic. My best wishes to all of you who have it. Fingers crossed for us!
Hopefully stem cell treatment will advance to the stage when it can replace hip replacement . Hip replacement surgery ,as we can see by this forum,is not a very successful treatment option for many of us.

I love that you responded. Thank u. That doesn't sound very optimistic does it? I don't know if I can stand it that long. It's so random and a really hard sharp pain. I can hardly function!

@tross68 I will say my pain has somewhat, definitely not completely decreased since the first year when it was horrendous . It’s still quite bad and it really limits me walking, but I keep hoping it will disappear and settle down. Does your doctor think you have this “end of stem” pain? Perhaps it’s not that at all. It might be, it might not be. Groin pain might be something different I think. Has your doctor suggested it could be a problem with the iliopsoas muscle? It connects to the thigh somehow and can also cause groin and thigh pain. Keep us posted!
Thank you

Hi @popolopo -- Have you seen the Mayo Clinic news network video on stem cell therapy for the hip?

Thanks, hope this is the future of hip and knee therapy. This is too late for many of us but very hopeful for future treatments.
