Has anyone improved bone density without meds?

Posted by naomid @naomid, Mar 21, 2023

I have a very problematic dental history and will continue to need additional root canals and implants. I also have Sjogren's Syndrome and want to avoid any drugs that cause rheumatic symptoms. Other issues in my health history make all of the meds risky for me. That said, I work out almost daily, lift weights, maintain a healthy diet, take all the recommended supplements, and get most of my calcium nutritionally. My endocrinologist wants me to take an infusion/injectable drug. I dread the side-effects, yet I'm afraid of fracturing, which hasn't happened over the many years I have had osteoporosis. That said, my numbers are getting worse (-3.2 spine, -3.1 hip). I need to do something more than I've been doing, and am at a loss. I need hope and solutions I can be at peace with. Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

@cloud60

Yes I meant to write Tymlos. I can’t remember if you are the person who did the patch or you did self injections. I might have to choose between Tymlos or Forteo. I think Tymlos is better quality outcome for most than forteo with less side effects.
Tymlos will be having an fda approved patch that I am thinking I might want on a year or two. Have you had any teeth or jaw problems from Tymlos or from Alendronate. Did you try the twice a year injections. I can’t do those in case of bad reactions.

Hi there @cloud 60.......just revisiting April and found that I didn't respond to your post. I did self-injections with Tymlos. The patch sounds interesting. Please let me know how it feels and works if you begin to use it. I had absolutely no jaw problems from Tymlos or Alendronate. I cannot do twice-a-year injections because the half-life that stays in my body is just way too much medicine at any given time. So daily and weekly work for me.

Hope to hear great news from you.

You are lucky and I wonder how Tymlos would b for me. I take 5 mgs per day of andendronate . I don’t like it because I get stomach aches but I am making myself get through this 7 tablets. The lowest dose is 5 mgs per day which is not made but 35 mgs per week is.
I know it’s not going to work for me long term . I am pretty sure Sunday after I took 5 mgs two days in a row that Sunday night my jaw aches bad . I took a few days off and tried it again Tuesday and then today Thursday. So I put myself on 5 mgs just to try to get through this bottle of 7 tablets and then I might try the actonel.

I just do 5 mgs every other day. It’s the best I can do with this.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago with -3.2 in the spine and -1.7 in the hips. I started on AlgaeCal bone builder pack and after 2 years, my spine was -2.7 and my hips was -1.
I have since stopped the strontium and only talking the calcium. Next scan will be in another year. Will update then.

Is Strontium part of the AlgaeCal? You stopped taking AlgaeCal with strontium altogether or just strontium? I’m looking for supplements for my osteoporosis and don’t know what to get? Thanks for sharing your experience!

@dulu and others it is good to keep in mind that the strontium in AlgaeCal's strontium booster as well as their bone builder pack, can throw off DEXA scan results, so bone density may look better than it is. The dose in this product is 680mg, the therapeutic dose, which will have this effect on DEXA because strontium replaces calcium in bone and is denser.

Also, bisphosponates and Prolia and to a lesser extent Evenity can pose dental/jaw issues but not anabolics like Tymlos or Forteo, according to my doc. You can double check this with your doc.

I would NOT call it ‘without meds’ but in my case what I have been doing is non specific for osteoporosis. However, after been treated for it, since I was in my late 40s - early 50s with everything available in the market ( synthetic), my OBGYN recommended I try BioTe. A Bio-identical Hormone replacement Therapy. I was been seen by endocrinologist for several years and treated for osteoporosis by him until I decided to listen to my OBGYN. In less than a year of pellet therapy, I was down to osteopenia and today after 8 years, I barely have any !! There is a support group site discussion on FB by the company ( BioTe) you may want to follow. It has worked for me. Hopefully you find it helpful.

Some of us have breast cancer fed by estrogen, including after menopause. I believe 1 in 8 women gets breast cancer and 80% are estrogen-fed. That doesn't mean don't do the hormonal approach to menopause, just that it is definitely a risk/benefit challenge.

Would you share the brand of Algaecal you get? Is strontium a separate supplement? Is it not good? Appreciate you answering these questions. I’m osteoporosis and just finished chemo. My next battle is with osteoporosis and I’m only 54….

@resort, I'm sorry you're going through all this, but fear not, you will probably have a wonderful life ahead and many good things to look forward to even though it's so hard to absorb the things that are happening now. I speak from my own experience because I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 49 and now 25 years later I have pretty bad osteoporosis. That said, I have led a beautiful life since that diagnosis and there's more to look forward to now. These diagnoses are not the end of a happy life. It just takes a while to figure out how to get through the things we face. In terms of strontium, I tried it many years ago and found that my bone density scores went up when on it, then plummeted when I stopped taking it. The research on it is still inconclusive. Here's a link with more information. https://americanbonehealth.org/medications-bone-health/why-strontium-is-not-advised-for-bone-health/
There are many other things you can take, aside from medications that can help your bones. Some of them are posted in this stream. Good luck to you and don't give up hope!
