Controlling Tinnitus: What works for you?

Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

There are numerous discussions about tinnitus under Hearing Loss and Tinnitus where you will find useful information and links to tinnitus information suggested by our moderators. While you may not have hearing loss, it seems to go hand in hand with tinnitus so there will be a lot of catch up information to read.

Glad to read your remark, very similar to how I am re following research & diet. Bummed that diet is so much to blame. Sugar & salt are bad news. Oh to be younger & healthier & eat pizza again & not get a stomach from dessert but I still take my chances with desserts.
I've been told and believe gluten is a trigger for autoimmune such as Graves' but to eat gluten free is so expensive and difficult. Sometimes I try hard to obey all the dietary restrictions but at some point I just have to eat because I'm hungry! Best to be aware early in life & not going on 70 trying to reset.

While this is not totally relevant to tinnitus even though certain foods can trigger it, I try to eat as gluten free as I can. But, beware of the ingredients in gluten free products as so many have sugar in them. Just be sensible and go ahead and have pizza occasionally if you want. I opt not to have many white flour products in my house but , if I want pasta, I will have it and it’s in my pantry. As for dessert, I have a piece of dark chocolate every night after dinner come hell or high water and don’t even want to know if it’s a trigger.

I know that too much coffee for me triggers an increase in tinnitus so, food wise, I try to think if something I ate today maybe triggered an increase(aside from my beloved chocolate).

And, yeah, you don’t have the same metabolism as you did back in the day so adjustments are necessary as long as you don’t go overboard and take the joy out of living.

@imallears lifestyle has changed a whole lot it’s ok I do what I can.
My thing is weather I’m sure of it but can’t pin it down as to tinnitus. They say I have Menieres that’s why salt restriction. No pizza etc.
Graves’ autoimmune that’s why no gluten recommended. That’s been 10 yr now. I gave up on the no gluten but do eat whole wheat pasta etc. and also food I like too.
It can always be worse.
Joy in life …on a good day yes. A lot of alone time but it helps re stress I think.

Little coffee, quit drinking & smoking a little pot years ago but I know a little pot would help in many ways but it’s illegal here.
Poor sleep patterns a key trigger. I fall asleep mid day sometimes & a nap triggers tinnitus too so it’s just a crazy life but yes I would love a break. Wouldn’t we all. Take good care.

@imallears yes Lots of links etc etc. yes I’ve been on the other discussion boards. Yes I have hearing loss & hearing aids with ‘brown noise’ turned on as I sit here writing but nothing is overcoming the Scream in R ear so I’m staying busy thinking about other things & doing laundry til my final appt with audiologist I have to turn in my loaners and pay for my (3rd) new pair of hearing aids today. I still can’t tell what direction sound is coming from. I still have tinnitus depending on the weather. It’s cool & sunny today. There’s no rhyme or reason. M fortune cookie the other day said a survivor isn’t how strong a person is but how responsive they are. That’s over my head a little but anyways I’m a survivor. 🙂

Taurine an amino acid.

3000mg/day (3g/day). I take two 1000 mg tabs with water first thing in the morning and a third later on.

I didn't think it was working until I quit. The relief was so gradual I didn't notice it, but when I quit, the return was quick.

Note: It didn't eliminate it for me, some days it's quiet, others a little noisy but the loudest it is now is about 10% of the loudest it used to be.

Of course, check with your doctor before taking anything.

Are you on any other meds like for high blood pressure or high cholesterol that this supplement might interfere with? Curious since I'm on those meds, but willing to try something for my tinnitus!

No meds at all.

I think Taurine is pretty safe, but I'm not a health pro.

Your best bet it to check with your doctor, as he/she knows your health situation.

Put taurine and tinnitus into google, and you might find some interesting articles.

I tried Taurine…2000 mg daily for nearly 3 months…not really effective for me. I did notice the tinnitus was better when I had been off it for about a month….and it’s still the same…good days and bad days. But Taurine is beneficial so nothing was wasted in the experiment.
