Suspected Endometrial Cancer: Cervix won't open to do biopsy

Posted by debra54 @debra54, Feb 1, 2023

The lining of my uterus is thick so they tried to do a biopsy but my cervix would not open and they mentioned having a hysterocmy but I'm not sure about doing that without knowing if it's cancer or not.

@val64

Do you think they tried a D&C, but failed? Did you read the description of what they did in MyChart? (My gyn oncologist doesn't communicate much with me directly, but he does write detailed descriptions of procedures in the chart, where I can see them.)

Can you go to a different doctor? This one doesn't seem to be making progress toward solving your problem. And you shouldn't have to deal with a doctor who dismisses your side-effects.

Yes it was a D&C tgat that they failed at...looked on my chart and he only used the dilators or metal rods but he didn't try any medicine and I know there's a med to help open the cervix.

Does anyone have a strange reaction to hormones? I've tried them all and everytime after about 3 days I get awful muscle cramps in my legs and arms and there so bad I can't sleep so I'll stop taking them and the pain goes away.

@debra54 You’ve brought questions to Mayo Clinic Connect that leads me to believe that your current doctor (gynecologist?) isn’t answering your questions or trying to figure out your symptoms. I can see that you are worried about endometrial cancer. I’m wondering if you are menopausal or if you are still having your periods? The thickened endometrium in your uterus is a question that certainly could be related to your symptoms and needs investigation. Since your current gynecologist was not successful in getting an endometrial biopsy during the D & C I think it’s time for another opinion.

You are in Canada in a small town? It may take some advocacy on your part but I’d recommend you talk with your GP (family doctor), talk about your concerns, and ask for a referral to another gynecologist in a larger medical practice. Referrals from your doctor smooth the way on getting an appointment and could get you seen more quickly. If that isn’t possible then can you call a gynecology practice in the larger city on your own and ask about an appointment?

Will you do that today? And then let me know what your plan is?

I'm going to have a 2nd opinion with a different gyn dr Thursday and I'll take mistoplol to open cervix this time so they should get biopsy so since my cervix will dilate with med it shouldn't be that painful?

Can a mri or pet scan see inside the uterus?

Hi @debra54, I moved your latest question about testing for possible gynecologic cancer to your original posting here:
- Suspected Endometrial Cancer: Cervix won't open to do biopsy https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/endometrial/

I did this so that you can stay connected with the women who have been supporting you in the anxious time of diagnosis.

@naturegirl5 shared some useful information about PET scans and MRIs of the pelvis and uterus in this earlier comment https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/806755/
PET scans and MRIs may be used in the diagnosis of uterine cancer or to see the entire pelvic region to check neighboring areas.

Went for biopsy under general anesthesia, was given 2 pills to filter prior to procedure. Doctor could not enter cervix. It was closed, endometrium thickness too thick. Sent me to a GYN oncologist for follow up and mentioned possible hysterectomy

It's stressful....but after I read my files on my chart, I found that I've had irregular bleeding since 2016 so I doubt it's cancer...new dr told me bout it a year ago..so, how long have you had issues?

They did a sonogram in February this year endometrium thickness 7mm. OBGYN suggested biopsy which was done yesterday under general anesthesia My cervix is entirely closed he couldn't do proper procedures. He explained to me possible cancer because of menopausal age 65 and spotting which is once in a while. He's referring me to a OBGYN oncologist fir treatment and/or hysterectomy
