For me, there is a definite link between what I eat for dinner and my cough. If I eat/drink foods that are acidic (i.e. tomato sauce, wine, chocolate), I am up ALL night coughing my head off. I now watch what I eat and the problem seems to be mostly resolved. I suspect I may have silent reflux. I also sleep with a wedge pillow which is very helpful. I don't know if that is responsible for your distress but is something to be aware of. My symptoms started all of a sudden. Last month, I never had any issues like this.
