However don’t want to make shoulder and knees worse by working out

Hello there @missannie42, 3rd time is a charm! Atta girl. I am sorry about your pain. Quality of life is loosely defined based on circumstances, but grabbing on to those things you love, that bring you joy, is the best medicine. I love my perennial Hosta garden. They bloom and grow like clock work and that brings me joy! What type of gardening do you do? Are you able to moderately work in your garden while managing your health symptoms?

Rachel, when I lived in NY state, I has lots of Hostas but I never knew there was more than one kind. They grew in the semi shade and I have none of that in Florida.
I have a small back garden that I plant flowers to attract butterflies. When I first planted it, I was able to make it beautiful. Now I get around with cane, foam mat on ground and a bench to help me get up. Most work is done laying on my side. It is very slow going. I have a gal who helps me 3 hrs a week to move heavy things. My husband tries to help but has bone cancer and gets very tired. Our dog keeps me company but she gets naughty and digs in wrong places. Garden life brings me joy, too.

Hello Jim. Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. My hubby has multiple myeloma and so did his father in 1970. Much has changed since. I hope you have something in your day that brings you happy moments to hold on to.

My suggestions is NO pills - they will only cause more problems in the end. [Advil for women will escalate osteoporosis; and elevate hearing loss] Instead ask for a referral to see a physical therapist/occupational therapist for exercises that can be done on land/water (pool) Don't forget to have them show you the elastic bands. These you take home and use daily. They need to be done on a regular basis because they are you pain pills. They help strengthen you muscles and keep you strong and agile.
Chiropractors are good for only a while and then you need to stop because you bones become brittle and break (osteoporosis). Then the threat of strokes plays in and this no longer is a feasible choice. I had too many and nearly died from an adjustment....my neurologist put an end to them...permanently. I use the bands instead. And my severe osteoporosis from using NSAIDS for too long brought me back to the bands also. I am healing my brittle bones with injections Prolia at the doctors office and hope to reverse the back things I did with all those pills. The one thing I can't reverse is my tinnitus and hearing loss.

@missannie42, laying on your side to get gardening done really speaks to your perseverance. Cane, foam mat, and a bench is a well planned garden attack. Maybe laying on your side may not quite be ergonomically correct, but I say, hey, whatever works for you to accomplish a goal, give yourself distraction, and find joy. Way to go! By the way, my Hosta garden IS in NY.😉 I'm sure glad you have a gal come in to help with the heavier lifting. That speaks to strategizing and problem solving - 2 of many tools that help ease the challenges of living with chronic conditions.

Hi @theblues, welcome. That's a difficult question to answer. I would say that your doctor knows the best answer to are you doing more harm than good. Do you mind explaining a bit about your condition?

Afraid not - I had c-difficule with sepsis after a surgery that went terribly wrong. The surgeon messed up and I nearly died. The physicians put me on 4-5 different antibiotics to save me. The combination of these powerful antibiotics sterilized my gut and also attacker my auditory hearing cells. Since the surgery - I have been hearing two different tones of noise in my head - in both ears. It started out as crickets and now it is a hissing sound. I use my hearing aids to muffle out the noise. It will never go away since this is was caused by ototoxicity or toxic medications to the sensitive organs of the hearing cells. Years ago they didn't know this but today scientists understand the danger of many drugs/poisons and meds. At the time, it was the doctor's practice vs keeping me alive. Most people usually died from this lethal infection that most often is found in the hospital setting. I have battled these two problems since the surgery ever since. The gut that has never worked correctly and the tinnitus that can't keep quiet no matter what. Eloise

My first reply went elsewhere. Sorry. I feel strange when someone sees me lying in my garden. Doubt I’ll think that way after reading your reply.
Don’t have any mantras from my drs but I do have this on my mirror, “This is the day the Lord hath made; rejoice and be glad in it!”
I’ll give a look at the suggestions you sent, too. I like reading about how other people have been creative with their own difficulties. 🦋
