Bleeding: I know what's happening is not normal but is it cancer?

Posted by hildac @hildac, Apr 18, 2023

Google is not my friend right now.
Post menopause 59 yrs old.
Started spotting 5 weeks ago. Was brownish in colour. Has progressed to bleeding and is red.
Ultrasound shows lining at 4mm.
Abnormal amount of fluid in my uterus.
Gyno appt today. She attempted endometrial biopsy but cervix was very narrow. Managed to get a small sample. If it's not enough we'll have to retry in hospital. No polyps observed.
I've had abdominal and lower back ache for about 6 months. Has gotten worse
All this to say I know my symptoms are not normal and much if what I'm reading us suggesting cancer.
Does anyone have any input or experiences to share?

@hildac This is rather frustrating. I so hoped that the sonohysterogram would show something that could lead to useful information for how to proceed. Since there was a biopsy done during the procedure is the plan to wait for these results before your gynecologist recommends your next steps?

Hi Helen
My sentiments exactly.
The biopsy was done earlier in the week by my gyno.
Given the only thing that has been observed in the imaging tests is a collection of fluid in my uterus I'm at a loss. I thought they would see something that would point to a source.
So the only thing we can do now is wait for the biopsy report.
I'm still spotting and bleeding. I think its day 26 now. Pain is uncomfortable but tolerable with some tylenol.
Frustrating indeed 😩

Hi~
I'm assuming you have every faith in your Gyn, but if not, CHANGE YOUR DOCTOR.
If you do like her or him, know that he or she will not fool around long with biopsies if they suspect any type of cancer - that is to say, if they are good. Blood tests are a diagnostic tool with cancer, as well as biopsy. Your doctor will find out one way or another right away if they even suspect cancer..
If your doctor puts you off waiting for weeks at a time between appointments or does not get to the bottom of your problem right away, I suggest strongly that you CHANGE YOUR DOCTOR..
Ask around all the women you know, especially those who you know to take very good care of themselves, who they might recommend. Also, ask your other doctors who they would recommend as a good Gyn.
Another doctor will have all your records right away (after you have them sent from your past to your new), so don't worry they won't be 'up to speed' on your current problem..

@hildac. How are you feeling? Do you have any new information from your doctor regarding the biopsy? I was hopeful that by now you would have some answers and a treatment plan.

Very wise words. My doctor blew me off for months until I got my devastating diagnosis. Do not wait and don’t worry about what they think. To many of them we are just numbers and dollar signs. Thankfully I have not been treated that way at Mayo.

Thank you ladies.
Still no word.
My GP did do some blood work to make sure I wasnt anemic and all is good.
I don't know the gyno but the women's clinic was recommended by a friend and gyno is one of the founders.
I will give it 2 more weeks.
I take small comfort in that she's not rushing the results but will not keep my eye off the ball.

Hi Helen. Up until 2 days ago it all seemed to be getting worse. But the last 2 days have been great. Not gone but I feel good . My blood work came back AOK so that's good news.
Still no word on biopsy results 😕

@hildac It’s great that you are feeling better. I’m glad for you that the blood work came back OK. It seems like a long time to get those biopsy results. Several years ago I was waiting for a biopsy and it turned out the lab had processed the biopsy is less than 48 hours but the results sat in the doctor’s office for almost a week! Do you have another appointment coming up with the doctor who did the biopsy and so you can ask?

I was 70 years old and 17 years post menopausal. Your symptoms are exactly like mine were… noticed brown spotting and later some red bleeding. Biopsy negative 9/21 but uterine walls were abnormally thick. Nothing done then. Symptoms persisted for a year. Biopsy 11/22 revealed adenocarcinoma. Had a robotic total hysterectomy 12/22 and lymph node biopsy with outpatient surgery. Only 5 incisions of one inch each. Recovery was not difficult. Tumor was slow growing and had not escaped the uterus. No chemo. No radiation. I am feeling great now ! My advice if there is any question get the hysterectomy but every case is unique. Prayers for successful results for you , too !

Do u take hormones? Could be that or inflammation. My gyn dr couldn't get biopsy either cuz cervix would not open and they put me to sleep for that so he suggested hysterocmy but going for 2nd opinion before I do that. Maybe they will find a way to see or get in uterus.

@wrightvillebeach Our stories are very similar. I was 67-years-old when I had the symptoms you describe. Like you I had a robotic total hysterectomy and had just small incisions that healed quickly. A hysterectomy is still considered major surgery and it took me awhile to get used to the idea that those organs were no longer inside me. My advice is similar to yours. Write your questions down ahead of time and ask them all. As it turned out my surgeon was prepared to answer most of my questions before I even asked them. She gave me a nice tutorial with pictures of what was involved and what she planned to do. I felt very reassured.

@hildac I hope you are still feeling good today. You’ve been persistent in getting care and asking for what you need. It’s not easy but we all have to advocate for ourselves.
