When will I be able to take my dog on long walks? 2 miles or so

I'm guessing the pain is in your knee when you flex it to walk. It's still early, so work on the ROM exercises you have. And give it time and ice, ice, ice.

I had mine 3 months ago still some pain when I flex to walk down stairs and when walking normally. I’m a bit disappointed as I can’t remember having this with my other knee . I’ve no idea why or what it is ? Any ideas as the surgeon doesn’t seem that concerned

You are an inspiration. I learned a lot from your post. I will have TKR in a week. However, my second knee is the same as my first and I want to walk again..even maybe hike easily one day, so I will have to do this twice. I am 76 year old female. I also have back stenosis. I am not giving up. I need any encouragement here and hopefully along the way someone will benefit from my story. Best wishes to you.

All the best to you. I am female and I take supplements. Calcium (great for bone strengthening) Vit D, Zinc, Vit B, Vit A and E along with Potassium, and Alpha Lipoic Acid ( which is good for nerve repair)
Everyday I have a protein shake that I add collagen powder to.
Weight is very important as well. Every extra pound of body wgt puts 4 extra pounds on one’s knee. I didn’t think I was overweight but through exercise and only eating (whatever I want) between 8am and 10 pm I have lost 20 pounds and this has also helped tremendously.
You might feel like this whole thing is like having a full time job with all the attention it gets and I certainly felt this way but “eventually” it pays off.
So hang in there and “Keep on truckin” as we used to say!!

Thank you so much for writing. I wrote down your supplements, similar to mine, except alpha linoic acid. I will check into that today. I wonder how just eating 8am to 10pm helps weight loss? I need some weight loss. It's just a pleasure and so helpful to read responses in Mayo Connect. Yes, every day one week prior to TKR, I am feeling like it takes up a lot of my time. I am forever grateful for my two grown Daughters who are coming each weekend to do my household chores and repairs. I lost my best Friend and Husband in December. I had planned for him to be with me through this recuperation, but God had other plans. I am stepping up, for sure, though difficult. I waited to the last moment for this surgery. I know because just walking is terribly painful. Thank you all who participate here!

I am 7 months out and I can mow my grass and it's 1.9 miles and about 45 minutes if I don't stop in-between. I am sore later that evening but use ice and it's ok the next day. I still am careful about overdoing as it can take up to a year but I'm doing everything except getting up off the floor. I did get on my bed on both knees and it didn't hurt like it did 3 months ago. I'll be trying getting on the floor soon.

Yes, it took me a several weeks to be able to walk long distances but I am able to walk all I want and as long as I want. Just be careful you don’t have the support when you twist your knee to turn and be careful on uneven surfaces at first. I do yard work and manage a welding shop and have no problems getting around the shop floor. Be careful with climbing as I am still missing a lot of strength in my knees.

My surgery was March 29. I’m 73 and have been doing exercises before and after surgery but still cannot walk normally without pain

Hi Sherry, I had a TKR on January 30,2023. I am 77 it has taken me 3 months to be able to sleep at night. I take two voltaren pills a day (previously only 1 before surgery) plus 1 neurontin only at night. I still have pain on side and back of knee. It's not as bad as it was after surgery but it sure isn't what I want. Hopefully it will be gone in 6 months! It has been extremely hard to recover with all the pain, but I am trying to be optimistic.
