Post Covid gastrointestinal issues: How long do they last?

Posted by clmmdm @clmmdm, Mar 19, 2023

Two months out from having Covid. Gastrointestinal issues still bothering me. Gas pains throughout mid section. Dr put me on Pantoprazole last week. Somewhat better but still experiencing gas pains.

Thanks ! I am taking a prebiotic/probiotic but haven’t taken an enzyme. I would like to know how and when you take them,
The ginger tea with probiotics seems to be helping me somewhat. What is the enzyme you are taking and is it a prescription? It’s nice to hear that someone like you is feeling better. Gives me hope’

I was a GI mess 6-8 months ago...not perfect but so much better now.
Directions given to me: Drink a glass of water with either a tbs of Braggs vinegar or lemon juice. Wait 15 min then take a bite of breakfast and then take the digestive enzyme with more water. Eat most of whatever your breakfast is then take the pre and probiotc. On the advice of a very holistic chiropractor I use Klaire Labs for the supplements. You can get them online. I also suffered with acute constipation off an on even though I eat a very healthy diet. Miralax is used as needed and Metamucil added if the Miralax is working too well. This is advice from my GI doc. It's all a delicate dance to get the bowels to work as normal as possible.

Good luck...I think each person has their unique issues requiring some trial and error.

I’ve only used probiotics for a short while, my stomach problems are on and off plus they vary in symptoms, I have tried the pills but they made me feel bad with lots of cramps so I switched to yogurt drinks with the advice from a pharmacist. I’m interested in learning more about probiotics and see if they can help me, thank you.

I have posted before but what has helped me a lot is using a digestive enzyme, a prebiotic and probiotic. Was suggested by my chiropractor and supported by my pcp and GI doc. Need to give it 12 wks to get the full benefit. If u want more detail about how and when to take them let me know. It's been a journey to get to a much better place with my covid gut.

Thank you. I’ve just started taking these regularly. Since Covid my stomach is a mess. Hopefully these will help.

Has anyone had positive results taking Dicyclomine?

Nah, you'll still be here! I've been sick since October 2021, and I'm alive and kicking! Granted, I am sick to my stomach every day, no appetite, have lost 12lbs., no energy, ringing in my ears, brain/gut disconnect. But I refuse to give up. You don't give up either!

My case sounds very similar to yours, I have taste but nothing taste like it should, I have lost a ton of weight and have no appetite. My family thinks it is not real. I have loose bowels with hardly any food going in. My case was basically all intestinal. During my bout w/ covid I could not keep any food or water down. I have started IV's and it gives me temporary relief.

victoriaj, Yes. I have IBS-C. The brand name is Bentyl for Dicyclomine and it helps tremendously for cramping (spastic colon). I couldn't have made it last year without it. I no longer am having to take it every day....just once in a while. I also am taking a powerful probiotic called Mega Sporebiotic by Microbiome. I had to start out slow....half a capsule. My IBS got worse with Covid when I was on a lot of antibiotic/steroids for double pneumonia & asthmatic bronchitis. I think it effected my gut. I am eating healthy and trying to get good flora in my gut. I hope this helps. God Bless You!

Thank you so much for responding - it’s really encouraging. This is my second go round with Dicyclomine and I’m taking a heftier dose and I think it may be helping though I don’t like the side effects (dizzy, lump in my throat). I had no gut issues before my second covid infection so this is still quite new to me. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and I hope this finds you well.
