Difference between Pregabalin and Gabapentin

Posted by karlag1953 @karlag1953, Mar 22, 2023

I am currently taking Pregabalin that was prescribed by my VA PCP, I have neuropathy in legs and feet. Which is questionable for 2 back/fusion surgeries or from Type 2 Diabetes. But, my question is what is the difference in Pregabalin and Gabapentin? What are the advantages/ disadvantages of either drug. I’ve been taking Pregabalin for years. Thank you so much for your comments.

@idumas

I was in gabapentin for two months. I didn’t get any pain relief and it caused me to have depression. My neurologist couldn’t suggest any other med because I take med for diabetes Insipidus, which is not related to diabetes mellitus, and also med for glaucoma. And these meds according to neurologist wouldn’t be compatible with the meds I am taking. I just use ibuprofen and Tylenol along with Xanax.

@idumas if you’re having pain and you’re not obtaining relief thru your neurologist ask them if you can see a pain specialists. I tried gabapentin and hated the way it made me feel so I never took it. I’m allergic to NSAIDs so my only anti inflammatory is Turmeric 2400mg 3x/day. I also have a buprenorphine patch that I change every 7 days and use CBD and THC oil too. Anything that works that will not harm me.

I'll try CBD and Tinctures before I'll add to my cocktail Big Pharma med's for Parkinson's (and the side effects of this disease) as well as a mood stabilizer for treating my Bipolar symptoms. When I asked the prescribing doctor about the long-term effects of taking the anti-depressant and mood stabilizer, without lifting his head to look at me (was busy catching up on his notes), all he told me, in a calm but distant voice, answered, "(They) can't be good"). Gotta love these guys making $3-4 hundred thousand/year. Which leads me to the response to , "Anything that works that will not harm me." I approve of medicinal marijuana, but just because it's a natural herb doesn't mean it won't harm you. Just saying, drugs are drugs, and scientific research is often slanted due to the influence peddlers who sponsor the funding.

If you enjoy being in pain that is your choice. I don’t know your age, I’m 71, and I do not wish to experience the final chapter in my life in pain. I was a nurse for 40 years and I know what is looks like to be in unremitting pain and have no desire to be there. I believe in the meds I gave patients and I know that can work. So if you don’t want to pay for meds that can help but you don’t want to be suffering either? The choice is yours my friend.

The spine doctor wanted me to take Gabapentin, but the side effects terrified me. I'm Lyrica now. Doing ok with it.

I take gabapentin. But I never take it every day. It causes fuzziness in me cognitively to such an extent I don’t feel it is ethical to take it on work days. No one can tell me if it’s habit forming or not so I’m making my own decisions on it. I’m a therapist.

The doctor that prescribed it to you didn't tell you anything about this drug. How about the pharmacist? That's very odd.

Gabapenton is considered a Narcotic, and usually only a one month prescription can be ordered at a time. I have been on it for some time. We have had to reduce the dosage, because I was sleeping round the clock. I did not have any brain fog, or dizziness, but it is the only thing that has helped my Trigeminal Neuralgia. The medicaton can be habit forming I am told, but so far I have not noticed this problem. I take a very low dose 25 mg twice a day.

I don’t believe Gabapentin is called a Narcotic, but I think there are 6 US states that have recently started labeling it as a controlled substance. For the life of me, I have no idea why on earth anyone would want to take more than needed of this drug; but just because my body feels no euphoria from it doesn’t mean some people react differently, especially when mixed with something if they’re goal is to achieve euphoria. I’m lucky that the states I’ve lived in still see this as a seizure & nerve related treatment and don’t control it. My prescriptions are written out in 90 or 120 day supplies to last 1 year before refill approval needed. I think everyone needs to ask their doctor or prescription plan to see if their state has controls (yet)

Unfortunately, California has very strict rules about this medication. I am taking Pregabalin and perhaps the restrictions are more severe for this one. It is definitely a controlled substance, and only 1 month prescriptions are allowed. Since I get my medications from Champ VA and they have to be mailed to me monthly, it is a constant need to contact my doctor's office and make sure my prescription is current, and that the medication gets delivered on time.
