Osteoporosis treatment

My osteoporosis has gotten out of hand. In February 2022, I suffered five compression fractures (L1-L-5) and in November, three more (T-10- T-12). Each time I spent 10 to 12 weeks in excruciating pain.
My endocrinologist has suggested starting me on Tymlos for 2 years, and then moving on to Prolia. Has anybody used this medication (Tymlos)? How was your experience?

Feel with you! I had similar experience in 2022 too. For many reasons I want to avoid medicines. For 1/2 year I have been adding oills for both Strontium and L-Reuteri to my healthy diet with a lot of Calcium. This in addition to K2 and D-vit. I feel very much better! But new scanning will first be in 2-3 years. Has anybody had experience with this diet-addings?

For 1/2 year I have been adding oills for both Strontium and L-Reuteri to my healthy diet with a lot of Calcium. This in addition to K2 and D-vit. I feel very much better! But new scanning will first be in 2-3 years. Has anybody had experience with this diet-addings?

My rheumatologist didn’t want me taking Stronium. She said it was like putting shellac on the surface of the bone, didn’t really help with the strength. I’ve also read where it can skew the DEXA readings. Like you, I want to try to improve my bone health without taking meds. In fact, my dentist very empathetically told me not to take them. I take a LOT of supplements because, even though I eat healthy, it’s a restrictive diet due to me having Sjogerns syndrome. I eat mostly meat, vegetables and fruit. I’m seeing a functional medicine Dr for help and advice.

Thank you for your comment! I hope we both will improve - in one or another way. All individuals are different - a fact that leads to different advices and experiences. More research is appreciated!? For my part, I can only state that my bone structure in several ways feels very much stronger than 1/2 year ago. Very thankful!

I heard that some of these drugs make a bone density test look better, but it's actually an illusion because the new bone density is so fragile that it doesn't help in the end. Is that why that have to take a break after Prolio, because of the bone "dust"...???

My dentist also told me not to take meds to improve my bone density, but now I have to take stronger meds, since it’s not about avoiding bone loss, but about trying to regenerate them, which is way more difficult.
I am sure she meant well, but I wish I hadn’t listened.

I know you did not ask about non-medication treatments, but I was able to increase my bone density within 11 months of working the Better Bones Program taught by Dr. Susan Brown, a medical anthropologist. I highly recommend taking her online course which covers assessment of bone strength, the Alkaline Diet, nutritional supplementation, enhanced digestion, exercise, and stress reduction. All these factors figure into bone health. My lumbar spine t-scores went from -2.5 - -1.9 utilizing the knowledge and practices that Dr. Brown advocates.

Why do you have to wait 2-3 years for another scan? Just my opinion, I would think a year is good to see if there is improvement. Two to three years sounds late in the process if it’s getting worse or staying the same.
