The newest weight loss medication, Wegovy (Semaglutide) came on the market in June 2021 and demand for the medication has been high. This medication, a once weekly injection, had excellent results in clinical trials showing weight loss of up to 15% body weight. It is recommended for adults with a BMI of > 30 or a BMI of > 27 plus weight related health concerns. It should be noted that Wegovy is recommended to be utilized long term for ongoing weight management.
The most common side effect of Wegovy is nausea (often due to feeling more full when starting this medication), but there are other side effects as well including:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Stomach (abdomen) pain
- Headache
- Tiredness (fatigue)
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Feeling bloated
- Belching
- Gas
- Stomach flu
- Heartburn
If you are started on Wegovy and experience nausea, it is recommended that you contact your health care provider for guidance. In addition, you can try eating bland, low fat foods, avoid lying down after you eat, eat more slowly, and increase your water intake (including foods with water like soup and gelatin) if feeling dehydrated.

I have the first month in my frig. I am terrified to try it since I have read how sick people get on it. I’m afraid I’ll miss work. Can you recommend ways to lessen the nausea and stomach issues with this medicine?
Hi @materialgirl , in addition to the notes in the blog post, here are a few additional tips. Know that the feelings of nausea are often short-lived and often go away once your body has adjusted to the medication.
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals, avoid skipping meals
- Try cool and bland foods like crackers, toast, or pretzels
- Avoid high-fat meals like fried foods or foods with strong odors
- Eat more slowly
- Drink water or ginger herbal tea regularly throughout the day, away from meals
- Avoid lying down after a meal
So in your opinion the rewards outweigh the risks, and they are manageable.?
This is a conversation to have with your medical provider, but symptoms can be managed with lifestyle changes, with medications (such as an antiemetic), or decrease with dose adjustments. You doctor will want you to stay in contact with them in the beginning especially to assess your tolerance of and response to the medication.

Started on Ozempic Dec 2021 at 340 lbs, moved to Mounjaro Jan 2023 last reading this morning 5/12/2023 225 lbs. I will gladly take any of the side effects experienced by the many comorbidities that I have reduced. The attached photo says it all.

It is essential to (consume vast amounts of water)
– Avoid lying down after a meal (try to walk daily). Do not think the pill is your magical way to slim and trim; it takes exercise, strength training, and good sleep.
I can not state this loud enough keeping a food log, Eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep are all essential for long-term weight loss success.
My main two issues with the pharmacological obesity drugs are occasional constipation and diarrhea.
Start with a low dose of the drug and gradually increase the amount. Attempt to keep a food log or any issues along with the foods you ate.
Be aware of the most common side effects of the drug and what to do if you experience them.
It is important to remember that obesity drugs are not a magic bullet; you will be on some type for your lifetime.
They are another tool to help you lose weight but are not a substitute for healthy lifestyle changes.

Stay away from the mass media that one is weak-minded" to overcome bad habits yet celebrate convenience food companies promoting junk items eaten during busy daily schedules.

Again I will state some unpleasant thoughts can occur from these medications, but the risk far outweighs them!
One should not rule out bariatric surgery, and that would be my first choice seeing my wife's experience with bariatric surgery and my experiences with obesity drugs.
I did not meet the qualification for bariatric with age, AFIB, and other issues.
