From a surgical point of view I did not find it very painful. I had a lot of mucus for awhile which I was told was normal. I had a very bad pain in my upper back from the positioning…. I was given Tylenol for pain but that does not help muscular pain so a few a few days post surgery I had to take Motrin ( with a heating pad) to get relief and sleep. My voice had started being very raspy before surgery and it sounded better. The scar covers work well…. I wore them for 6 months and my scar is not really noticeable. Good luck!

I used “scar away” but they are like bandaids made of silicone…..like the ones you can get for blisters. They are expensive however you can leave it on for a few days and then take it off to wash and reapply it. I had used them many years ago to keep the scar from stretching when I had ankle reconstruction and the scar is so light you can’t really see it….so I used them. They are clear so all you see is a shiny cover….definitely worth it! They sell them with a cream however I bought the ones without the cream and just used them; they work fine alone.
I heard you can get them cheaper online but I just got them at the pharmacy’s.
I had my thyroid removed, not much pain just in my neck for awhile, and nerve damage in my left shoulder from poisoning, that lasted three years before back to normal. I used fresh aloe Vera for my scar that worked real well.

After my surgery my voice was a little strained but fine. I noticed the strained quality in my voice increase when I spoke a lot; I also felt pain in my neck when I was speaking a lot. It might have been related to the amount of head movements that we do when we speak along with the soreness in the area from the surgery; but it improved with time.
