Does anyone have experience with a lumpectomy and a breast reduction?
I’m 75 and the cancer surgeon will remove the cancerous tissue including lymph nodes and then the oncoplastic
surgeon will do a reduction on both breasts. Anyone been through this? Advice?

Thanks I saw the oncopllastics guy yesterday and your response is so reassuring! I’m a go for Tuesday. Will do both .. lump and down to a C.. no drains.. I was really surprised..I’m nervous but wanting to get it done.. magic 8 weeks is up on the 13 th .. so cutting this close… no hospital stay.. going to spend the night at the hotel on the hospital campus so help is close by “in case” thanks for everyone’s help. I’ll keep updating
Best of luck to you on Tuesday! Sending good thoughts…
Hi all, I had a lumpectomy and a breast reduction in the same surgery in 2013 - for many years I wanted a breast reduction but would never have done it had I not had this opportunity to do it at the same time I actually look at this as a gift (The silver lining) so glad I was able to do it and wondered why I didn’t do it so many years before - the only caution I give is the first time you set up after that surgery be prepared for the feeling that your nipples are going to fly off and hit the wall across the room ha ha - I didn’t have to have any kind of drain tubes or anything - wishing you the best - Sylvia
Ha ha, I take it the feeling of nipples flying across the room hurt a bit?
It was a little disconcerting when he talked about removing them and putting them over to the side till he finished and then sizing and placing them appropriately…I. Can easily imagine them flying and doing somersaults!
Thanks for the good wishes..I’m taking all I can get!
Thank you for that response. I did some checking on Anastrozole Therapy and found that there was an article by the University of Pittsburgh, funded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, about Cognitive Function. They said there was a decline during the first 6 months of this Therapy. An improvement from 6-12 months. But another decline from 12-18 months in working memory and deterioration in concentration. Now as my mother and her four sisters all had dementia around the ages of 75-85, I decided not to take this Anastrozole Therapy.
On the topic of Radiation, I was unsure how to proceed. I had read if your tumor is very small - 2mm -clear margins and no lymph node involvement, you might not have to have surgery, but to 'watch and wait' - having a yearly Mammogram, and checkups with your Doctor and Oncologist. I already had the surgery, so thought I could also go the same route. If the cancer comes back, I can have the Radiation then, because you can only have Radiation once on the same Breast, is what I understand. Otherwise, I would have to have a Mastectomy.
My Oncologist wants to do a whole breast radiation treatment, but only for 15 weeks plus the boost. instead of the 25 weeks plus boost. I like the idea of your 'partial breast radiation' and will ask her about this at our next appointment. I would still like the opportunity of 'watch and wait. because if I have radiation now and the cancer comes back, I will have to have a Mastectomy. You can't have radiation twice on the same breast as I understand it. And the cancer may not come back. If it does it still gives me more options. By the way, I did write about the Aromatase Inhibitors causing poorer cognitive function. (University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Study between 2005-2012). As my mom and her sisters had dementia in their later years, I'm not going to take a chance on taking that.
Thank you again for all that information. The reason I'm not taking Anastrozole is that my mom and her four sisters got dementia in later life, and I read a report from the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute between 2005-2012 saying that it caused a decline in Cognitive Function. So, that's the reason I don't want to take a chance on that! Good luck going forward - good to know about the risk reduction with the radiation.
Looks like you have a good plan. The treatment is individual, you must to choose what is the best for you. It can be radiation and endocrine therapy together, can be just one of them. The outcome of all the combinations is pretty similar, what I learn from my doctor. It is important the tumor is not big and lymphonodes are negative. Good luck with your treatment!
Good luck with your choice— sounds like you have carefully chosen your path. Doctors tell me i probably will need radiation since they suspect lymph involvement; small tumor so maybe no chemo/ biological/etc. waiting….
