Is there a way to prevent diverticulitis from recurring? Is there a change in diet that can help heal the colon issue that causes it?

I presented myself @ the Emergency Room on 3/31 with fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and the doctor told me, no bowel sounds. The CT Scan revealed diverticulitis. I was placed on 10 days of Flagyl and Cefdinir. Since then my Sjogrens has increased and eyes, mouth and intestinal mucosa have been compromised. Also I now have increased inflammation in my body, severe constipation and constant pain just above the umbilicus (stomach or intestine). Since the radiologist diagnosed diverticulitis I am wondering if there were also other findings in the radiology (?). I, too am not able to see my GI doctor until August and have a Telemed with my Stanford GI doctor scheduled for August. I communicate with these physicians as well as my Rheumatologist by portal. I respect my current GI doctor but he is too busy to see me in timely periods.

My GI Doctor recommended more cooked vegetables, NO RAW VEGETABLES, increased ingestion of water, Miralax twice a day and 2 Senna tabs, 2 hours of exercise per day. He also OK'd popcorn

I am currently involved in water aerobics in a warm water pool.

So sorry to hear that your pain is so high and so constant.
My pain is pretty minor and my episodes are only every 2-3 months. Surgery is always mentioned if I go to the ER or talk to a doctor. I guess I will eventually do that.
In the meantime I will remember the low residue diet as an option if my episodes increase in pain level or frequency.
Thanks

There is no guarantee that diverticulitis will not recur but a few changes in lifestyle will help reduce the risk.
Opting for a fiber rich diet ( plenty of fruits/ vegetables, whole grains). Drink adequate amount of water (Half your body weight in ounces at a minimum). Fiber supplement recommended by your doctor. Exercise daily.

I was told recently that for diverticulosis/diverticulitis sufferers there is "good" fiber and "bad" fiber, the bad fiber being nuts, seeds, whole grains, brown rice, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables (especially leafy greens); the only good fiber supposedly is white rice, heavily processed oats or oatmeal, non-whole grains, lean meat, and canned fruits and vegetables. And following that does seem to help; one leaf of lettuce does make me feel awful.

Any response, advice?

I have tried MiraLAX .Metamucil does anyone else have any recommendations on fiber supplements that take everyday I had diverticulitis in June with a whole in color (abscess) had colonoscopy and have 2 spots of diverticulitis and to eat regular food other than soft leaves pain in side. Been drinking 64 ounces of water still no luck please help

After I had to have a colon resection I asked the surgeon what I needed to do to prevent it from ever happening again. His answer was a quick “never let yourself get constipated.” Well that is easier said than done if you have chronic intestinal issues. I tried both Metamucil and Miralax. They did nothing at all. What has worked for me is IBS Clear with bioperine. I know it probably won’t work for everyone, but for me it does, Good luck.
