Sjogren’s and Loss of Taste and Smell

Posted by susanh824 @susanh824, Apr 5, 2023

I have had stable Sjogren’s for over 30 years (age 64). Over the past year, I have gradually lost my senses of taste and smell. The only thing I can still taste is salt. To the best of my knowledge, I have never had Covid. An exam ny an ENT specialist showed no irregularities. Could this be related to Sjogren’s

I just saw this post and thought to myself, "maybe I am not going crazy because everything tastes different." I have been tested for Sjogrens, the results negative. However, my former rheumatologist and now friend has advised me that one can still have Sjogrens even though the lab test shows negative. She believes that I have this autoimmune disorder, along with the obvious Raynaud's and dry mouth.
Best of luck to you, and thank you for this post

Thank you! Good luck to you as well. I need to stop losing weight, but don’t enjoy eating anything, except maybe saltines. I still can kind of taste the salt.

@susanh824 to lose your sense of taste and smell must be awful. When i worked on an oncology unit, our patients were advised to increase the amount of spices in their food. I don’t know how well this works but , give it a try!

Thank you! I have a spicy chicken dish in the crockpot, and am hoping some of the taste comes through. The only thing that I’ve noticed that I can still taste a bit is salt.

@susanh824 I went researching to find some answers for you, but everything was clinical trials with no specific answers. Then I found this article from the Cleveland Clinic that may be of help.

Let me know if this helps at all!

I have been on Thyroid since the age of 22 and have not lost any of my taste buds, but I have read that as we age it is part of growing older that we tend to lose our Taate.
