ground-glass opacity in lungs

Posted by elizabethjoy @elizabethjoy, Mar 26, 2023

Wondering if all of you have the "ground-glass opacity" in your lungs & what you were told about it? My pulmonologist said it's viral pneumonia from covid & will do another CT scan in a few months to see if has changed it may become chronic.

I've never heard of this. I had double viral pneumonia with Covid and since I already battle asthma, I had asthmatic bronchitis. I will say this, I am more prone now to asthmatic bronchitis since I had Covid, but, I have not had pneumonia again. God bless.

Yes, I’ve been told I had it. A little over a year ago, I had covid pneumonia, in the hospital for 3 weeks with 40 liters high flow bypap, came out with 24/7 oxygen until recently moving to a lower elevation.
I’ve had two CT scans since the hospitalization and my lungs still show ground glass opacity. My pulmonologist said I have Post inflammatory pulmonary fibrosis, which is damage to the lungs. I’m not sure it is curable. But he did say,it doesn’t look like it’s getting worse, its has showed stable.

Wow, I'm so sorry you've had to deal with all that!! I'm afraid this may not go away. I'll have the second CT scan in June. Are you managing to live a pretty normal life with it now? Did you gradually get stronger?

Actually, I did forget to mention, though my lungs have stayed stable, my February 2023 pulmonary function test was better than my September 2022 test, so that was a positive. I just have moved to a lower elevation 4 weeks ago and I have been off my oxygen during the day for 3 weeks, but need it for exercise and more strenuous activity.
I know there are changes that I have to live with, but I feel like I’m back to more of a normal life, and definitely much stronger in the past 6 months. I am 66 years old and I believe packing and unpacking at the new place has got me more motivated to be more active. My pulmonologist said we need to stay active. So in general I feel like I’m living more of a back to normal life, than I have had the past year. I’m not sure where you stand on prayer, but through many people praying and myself praying, I believe I am still here and doing as well as I have been. I was told from the CT scans of my lungs in the hospital I’m lucky to be alive, and feel very blessed.
One thing I was told in the hospital is that to lay on my stomach, its called proning, and I still sleep like that at least a couple hours a night and do deep breathing. Good luck, and I have confidence you’ll continue to improve

Wow, thanks for sharing all that. Helpful & encouraging! & I am a total believer in prayer! I had not heard about the stomach sleeping. I'll pray your healing continues, too! Thank you. God bless!!

And my prayers for your healing too. My nurse friends and husband has said that the lungs are remarkable and how they heal themselves.
May God Bless you also.

This is very common in Valley Fever patients. I had it a few years ago before Covid with the same MRI lung result description.
Hope you feel better.

I also find intentional breathing helpful: 8 in, hold for 4, breathe out for 8. Still having a feeling of tightness in my lungs. I have a ground glass nodule along with some that are not ground glass. I did have covid in Feb 2022, but just noticing the tight breathing again over the springtime. My last PFT was not perfect and the Dr wants to run another one. I will probably get one in the fall before returning to the pulmonologist in the winter. I am just being followed, but that first round of tests was unnerving. I am starting short stints of yard work, bending over , which may help.

The pulmonologist I go to treats Valley fever, I live in AZ. He seems to think my lungs will stay the same since covid. We’ll see😊

Wishing you well. I do have to say my pulmonologist said to stay active. To see if I could go off 24/7 oxygen we decided to move to lower elevation, with the move I had to become very active with packing and all, we have now unpacked and I almost feel back to normal, off oxygen during the day, but need it for long walks and more strenuous activities. My point being, I truly believe more activity has made me much better.
