Both legs sore during day and spasm during sleep. Muscle twitching.

Posted by dnp2335 @dnp2335, Mar 4, 2023

I’m on 7 weeks of the weirdest symptoms. I’ve been to my primary Dr, sports med Dr, Sleep Dr and Neuro-muscular neurologist. None have seen this before. Sleep Dr ruled out RLS. This issue is only when I sleep so it’s not induced by body position. Once I fall asleep, I wake up every 1.5-2.0 hours every night. I haven’t had one night making it 3 straight hours. When I wake up, my upper legs feel tight deep inside the legs and when I straighten them they spasm and the inner cramp releases and I can go right back to sleep. This pattern continues night after night.
I’ve tried everything, epsom salt baths, quinine, thc, CBD, prescription muscle relaxers, warm baths, stretching, foam roller, heat pad, ice, Gabapentin, every sleeping position possible…you name it and I’ve tried it. Has anyone heard of this before and have any suggestions that I can ask the neurologist about on?

I’ve also had sporadic muscle twitching since last March, 2022 but don’t have any muscle weakness. Thank you for any help. My legs are pretty sore throughout the day and if I sit at my office desk for 1/2 hour, when I stand up the hamstrings are so tight and hurt. Neuro thinking most likely a neurological issue but ordered blood tests and a thoracic spine MRI. They feel the brain, lumbar and cevical spine MRI’s look good and do not point to a physical issue being the cause to this. Thank you for any help.

Regarding muscle cramping, twitching, seizures, I have similar symptoms & found that 500 mg of Magnesium supplement at night did help alot but not totally. I’m usually very skeptical of supplements but Magnesium is a basic chemical necessay for the body relative to bone & muscle functioning. If this suggestion helps some, great, if not I wish you the best in your search for something that does.

I found magnesium glycinate to be the most helpful form of magnesium at night.

Good morning! Sorry you are going through this and I hope I may help! I don't know if you have studied the pamphlet that comes with the different medicines, but the one for Gabapentin (Neurontin) is possibly causing most of your symptoms. I was on Gabapentin for a number of years and I was only getting worse. I read that information sheet and discovered just that, so I stopped taking Gabapentin and have had no ill effects! As for the way your body reacts when you are trying to relax and/or go to sleep, my body did that to the point I thought I was going to have to use a bullet in order to get relief but I started taking Ropinirole (Requip) and I can relax, fall asleep and sleep for long periods at a time. I take it about an hour before bedtime (as it takes about that long to kick in) and go right to sleep. When the pill wears off, (in about 10-12 hours and trust me, you will know) time to take another! Hope this helps and take care, be safe! @btsum68

I had similar symptoms that kept me up hours during the night as many as four straight days.(I did not have seizures.) After a series of neurological tests, I was diagnosed with Myoclonus and prescribed Clonazepam to be taken before going to bed. It eliminated my symptoms and allows me to sleep. It may or may not apply to your situation; however, I thought I would mention it in case you wanted to discuss it with your doctor.

Hello and thank you for the info! It would be so nice just to be able to relax and not feel like you're in a straight jacket with a bunch of creepy crawly creatures are under your skin! Take care!

Thanks for sharing. Creepy crawlers, yes, that's exactly what it looks and feels like! My fasciculations/twitches are controlled by atenolol 25mg. It's actually a beta-blocker blood pressure medicine, but miraculously controlled my fasciculations. I originally took 50mg when I had high blood pressure. I now have low blood pressure and heart rate, but take the lower dose only to control fasciculations. Without atenolol, my fasciculations quickly turn into horrid muscle cramps anytime I'm resting or sleeping. My cardiologist thinks 12.5 mg will work, but I've been afraid to lower the dose and find out. Mine are due to Hereditary Neuropathy with Pressure Palsies (HNPP). Best of luck to everyone with this.

Have you tried magnesium ? Not magnesium oxide. That is for constipation. And eat roasted unsalted almonds ( magnesium in those). I need I significant amount of magnesium to keep my muscles relaxed.

Magnesium glycinate works well for me. Taking it late in the day also helps with relaxation.

Have you had any nerve conduction studies>

I get twitching where you can see the big muscles move. Feels like they are rolling (hamstrings and calves and feet). I get spasms pretty bad they started in the calves then hamstrings now they are worst in ball of feet and toes. When I walk I feel like I’m gonna snap a muscle they are so tight.

I was just put on Baclofen but a just taking it at night to avoid urinary retention. It calms the legs down I think, but the feet still don’t feel any different. I am to take it up to three times a day. But need to check side effects first.

I’ve had this for last two years. I’m having an EMG tomorrow with the neuromuscular dr. She is more open then the other one. She is getting 80 pages from one doctor and is waiting for info from on other dr. She wants all tests and exams before diagnosis. She is looking at two neuromuscular disorders.

So I’m not sure I’ve helped here. Just dont give up. I used to wake up every night with pain and spasm too. The max dose of cyclobenzeprine wasn’t helping so this dr started me on the baclofen.

I’m not sure if she will want to do a spinal tap on me. That’s usual diagnostic course of action.

Don’t give up on finding answers. This dr told me spasms would not be caused by neuropathy. If I knew that I’d have seen her long ago. This has progressed since starting two years ago in the legs.

I also get very fatigued and double vision when I get tired. So I rest and that gets better. Don’t know what she will find.

I should get answers soon….hopefully. And I hope you get real answers soon to.
