Klonopin taper

Posted by dawgbone @dawgbone, Jul 31, 2017

I have been on some kind of benzo for almost 40 yrs. I am trying to taper from 1.5-2 mgs of klonopin daily . Began in mid may 2017 and my last cut was very small on 7-2-17 to get to 1mg. Honestly feels like i am dying. I also take trazodone 75 mgs and 4 drugs for high blood pressure. I have been researching gabapentin and seroquel to help with the withdrawal symptons. Please offer any suggestions or help. I am 69 yrs old and cant even leave my house to visit my kids and grands. Thank you for any help!

Hello Reese, I will make a note of the Buspar, anti-ansiolytic, and ask my doc. It might be an option for me. The klonopin was originally given to me for what they called spasmodic torticolus. My neck would pull to the left, and it eventually stopped doing that but I developed a tremor in my head, and left hand, some in right but not as bad.

The doctors up at OHSU (neuro in Oregon) shot botox into both sides of my neck for 9 months, but I had to keep taking the klonopin.

I kept telling myself, and doctors never seemed to worry, that my little pill wasn't going to harm me and if I didn't take it for a couple days, I felt awful so just kept taking it.

I don't know if I mentioned that I am 70 now so I do take only magnesium, and D3 for now but again, I'm looking at L-theanine. My cupboard is full of things I couldn't tolerate, for another thread. So I have to be careful of everything as I don't have any resistance to most things.

I have another issue I'll hold off for now, just got up and not very coherent as I took a melatonin, 3 mg, and it knocked me coocoo and I still woke up every 2 hours. It was recommended for weaning off klonopin. No more of that, better off without it 😉 Thanks so much for getting back to me, Denise PS @reese1 , I went into other issue from 2 summers ago in my reply to lacy above 😉

It took me a long time to get through the withdrawals, but I did get through the worst of them, and you will too. I am still working on building self-confidence, since the w/d really kicked the living _____ out of me. Just stay positive and keep working out. Take one day at a time and remember how many other people are going through the same thing right now--you are definitely not alone. According to the FDA, in 2019, an estimated 92 million benzo prescriptions were dispensed from U.S. outpatient pharmacies, with Xanax being the most common. Doesn't that make us feel warm and fuzzy all over? Now, imagine how many people are going through the w/d and trying to get off of them. Yikes! Sometimes, when I am driving my car, I wonder how many other people are driving down the road going through the withdrawals. Keep your eyes on the road, right? Anyway, know you are not alone.

Did you already mention how you weaned off, how much at a time Reese? I have to be careful because of the TIA issue I mentioned, even though I don't think it was the weaning off that caused it.

I'll re-read your posts in case I missed the info I mentioned in first sentence 😉 Thanks much for your support, I do so appreciate it, Denise

goldengirl1952,
Why do you want to get off klonopin if it has helped you
all these years?
I have been on it for many years due to my Essential Tremor and it
helps me sleep. I feel very normal on it. I will stay on it till I die. It is
the quality of life not the quantity.

This drug was dangerous for me and frankly caused my tremors. I never had any tremors until Sleep Doctor prescribed this crap medicine. My regular doctor was shocked that he gave it to me and said he would NEVER EVER prescribe that drug. I have been off for 4 weeks now and glad to be done with it.

I can't imagine that being off Klonopin for a few years had anything to do with a TIA or Seizure etc. No way they could be related after that much time.

Hello I'm new here. I'm having a heart procedure at Mayo sometime in April. Really grateful to their devoted staff for helping me out. Read some of the comments on Klonopin. Been on it for years. Down to taking 1 or 2mg. per day. I don't think it helps at all. I'd drop it completely, but I'm afraid of any withdrawal effects. Had a doctor mess with a script for Lyrica for pain.. I was off Lyrica for five days and had terrible withdrawal. I have sciatica pain, and it's about the only pain killer I can tolerate due to stomach/IBS problems. I can't take most anti-depressants either because of terrible stomach problems. Ugh! I once heard a group of doctors say that anti-depressants didn't work. I think they're right frankly. Been on Klonopin for more than 20 years. Noone mentioned addiction then. So here I am now so I have cut down consumption. Memory problems have been a problem for a few years, and Klonopin doesn't help any. I can tell a difference between taking 1 or 2 MG. Hard to believe it makes a difference, but it does. All these addictive meds are a pain (literally).

I cannot emphasize the word "slow" enough. We know that w/d can cause a heart attack. However, you wean, be sure to do it as slowly as you can. I chose water titration. I found it to be agonizing cutting the pill. I was on 1 mg of Xanax forever. I had to switch to Klonopin, 1 mg., and then I had to cut it in half and took the .50 for a month (agony.) I started the water titration on the other .50 and that lasted approximately six months. The w/d did continue fairly intense with the worst one being on New Years Eve (my last taper.) I thought I wasn't going to see daylight, but I did (God is Good.) In hindsight, I realize that I should have titrated much slower. Maybe, I should have quartered the pill and then started the water titration. On another note, if you decide to do it that way and you have to get through something traumatic in your life, you can "hold." In other words, titrate the same amount, until you get through the traumatic event and then resume the process. Everyone has their own way of handling it and that was the way that worked for me. The Ashton Manual and YouTube can help you with it, as well.

I would definitely ask my doctor when I should start to taper after my heart procedure. He may not want a taper to begin for a whole year. Your heart has to heal. I did have some fluttering in my chest going on while I was tapering. It is gone now but I went through w/d for 2.5 years. Be very careful.

I wasn't off klonopin at all, I hope I didn't type that. I know I am getting forgetful and not the best at typing anymore. I was weaning when I went up camping, had gone down to .5 mg after being on .75 of a mg, and before that I'd been taking 1 mg for years. I never felt I needed more than that luckily.

I guess titration is dissolving the pill in water, but I've been breaking mine. I do believe, and understand how important it will be for me to go slow. I decided I would do another month on .75 because I don't want to take the chance of another TIA or whatever happened to me. As I mentioned, the neuro, cardio nor my MD (including ER doctor) found a thing that signaled a TIA, heart attack, nothing. It was so weird, I even got at extra ultra sound because I told them it felt my spleen (area) was like a basketball. I could feel my organs while I was numb.. Hope that makes sense.
