Scared about surgery for thyroid cancer: What helps recovery?

You’ll most likely be fine as thyroid cancer has one of the best long term survival rates of all cancers.
Seek several / many opinions as we did as it was very helpful to hear about different approaches and procedures. As you learn more about your options and your doctors you will probably feel less anxious and in a better head space than right after initial diagnosis.

Thanks. I'm just waiting for them to call for when surgery is going to be. It could be right away are in April. Very scared.

It’s hard not to be scared when you hear the word cancer, however thyroid cancer is considered to have one the best outcomes. Definitely get a second opinion and ask questions about the type of cancer and the possibility of lobectomy as opposed to a complete thyroidectomy. If you can have a lobectomy your other half of the thyroid might work fine alone and prevent the need for Synthroid.

It is scary when you hear the word cancer. The surgery itself was truly not as bad as I thought- you will get through it. I know how hard it is but try and take one day at a time. I have a more aggressive thyroid cancer and am older, so I have days where I get depressed and let the fear take over, and then I have days where I live my life. A friend posted this on FaceBook- maybe it will help a little- "Fear doesn t prevent death. It prevents life" It is true. Get support- friends, family, counseling, support groups....it does help to know others are there . Stay strong- you will get through this!!!

Yes, schedule surgery but also definitely get second opinions from surgeons and endocrinologists.
You will gain some knowledge from theses meetings and that will help alleviate some of the fear and anxiety

Have to see a ear nose añd throat specialist scare tissue before surgery. Should I be concerned? Surgery is at the end of April.

Hi @littleoreo2021, I wanted to check in on you. I see that your surgery has been scheduled for the end of April, but that you've been referred to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist first. You mention scar tissue.

Have you seen the ENT specialist? What type of surgery will you have? Lobectomy to remove a lobe of thyroid or a thyroidectomy to remove the whole thyroid?

I have to see the ENT specialists on the 5th about the scare tissue. It's still scheduled for surgery o 26th of April.

I had a thyroid tumor removed. Thankfully, it was not cancer but I will tell you, of all the surgeries I have had for other issues, this was the easiest. No throbbing pain; just soreness and you will use ice for awhile. Good luck and be calm. Oh, and my friend had thyroid cancer 35 years ago and is fine today.
