I am experiencing profuse sweating off during the day and nightly. Is this common post Covid?

@mkportzen

I’m a long hauler covid person, I had covid in January 2022, in the hospital for 3 weeks. It’s interesting that I found this. I’ve been telling my husband that I have been sweating lately, which really surprised me, because I never sweat, neither does anyone in my family unfortunately. I thought maybe my metabolism is working better, but it maybe just the long haul covid.

Same!! I got Covid in 2021 and I have not stop having sweats all during the day and night. I had no idea it was Covid. I take Gabapentin(prescribed)during the day and Sleep Cool estrogen which is over the counter to help with the night sweats. I’m only 38 and my hormones are normal. Glad to have found an answer.

It is just awful to be almost constantly perspiring. When i am doing anything I just drip water. Otherwise the back of my hair is always wet. I am also having hot flashes. I am 74, and menopause is long gone. I have been taking Duloxetine, 60 mg for the hot flashes and it helps, but not really with the perspiration. I am going to try your remedy. How many mgs of Gabapentin do you take? Once a day?
Thank you

Hi @dr4bama - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

Sweating does seem to be a pretty common side effect of COVID-19, unfortunately. I know it can get very uncomfortable throughout the day!
Others have discussed ongoing fevers with sweating as a side effect on this discussion post, you may find it helpful to read through:

Have you continued to have a fever at all in your recovery? Have any other symptoms continued?

I never had a fever, despite three weeks of hospitalization. Most of my symptoms are gone. Sometimes the smell in my nose returns with a different odor, but just for a short while. Sweating is a real problem. Now I have a swollen lower face, and lumps above my clavicle. MRI says it's swollen buccal glands. I have an appointment with a specialist later this month. The Cleveland Clinic has a very good article on Salivary Glands, and the swelling could be caused by many things. All the doctors I saw had no idea why the swelling occurred. One told me that liposuction was the only thing to get rid of the swelling. This is also attributed to long covid. I have to wonder if different symptoms are going to continually arise.
I contacted the Mayo Clinic last week and have not heard back from them.

I can understand your situation as I am in the same boat. I am so embarrassed when I start to perspire in front of people, so I stay away from even small get togethers . This virus has caused such havoc, not only when it's acute but when long covid manifests. Mine manifested three months after I was hospitalized for Covid. It is now 14 months later and a new symptom has arisen. My lower face is so swollen, I look like a chipmunk. I have lumps above my clavicle. Doctors have asked me to let them know what the cause is when I find out!! I'm pretty sure is a lymphatic issue so I have had lymphatic drainage treatments, but no luck so far. I see another specialist later this month. Yes, I am crying too!

I also have been perspiring profusely. I perspire even if I am just sitting, and if there is any exertion, I am then soaking wet. My hands also tremble. I have just started with herbs. Since there is nothing known to cure this from covid, I am being treated for viral infections such as Epstein Barr. It takes a while as its three weeks on one, then another three weeks on another, blood test and finally three weeks on another. I will update. This is thru a functional medicine doctor who is also a regular MD--not someone who is adding this to his current practice--whatever that may be.

Wow.
Once again: thank Heaven we have each other. I’ve been told… well, you all know what I’ve been told!! Fact is, this is debilitating. Sweating so profusely changes up everything. As does dizziness. And fatigue. Very very validating. I hesitate to say this, because I don’t want to discourage anyone? But I got Covid in 3/20. I have had a few months here and there where I felt pretty good. That’s what I’m hoping for.

Hi @car0. Thank you for sharing your experiences to help all of us have realistic expectations while we heal from this! I had phone appt this morning and just laying in bed talking caused severe sweating with horrible odor. No rhyme or reason other than seems bodies cant do more than one thing, like thinking and talking, or unaware have used up energy and brings on these various debilitating/embarrassing/everchanging symptoms. Been doing this over a year and hopeful everyone will find personal care methods and this groups support for healing🌈
