How do you deal with oral allergy syndrome and histamine intolerance?

Posted by npbranco @npbranco, Mar 13, 2023

I'm not sure if this is the right place to write this, but I'm dire need of a few words of support, so I'll try here.
For a few weeks now I've had slight difficulty breathing and some edema and tingling in my mouth when I eat most things. I've already done the tests and I have no allergies other than grass pollen allergy, but it has been manifesting this way, instead of through my respiratory system.
My worst symptom is actually difficulty swallowing, as I feel as if there's two lumps on the sides of my throath. Eating solid stuff makes the feeling more bearable, but drinking water makes it worse. Going out, even with a mask, seems to aggravate it too and the space seems to become some narrow I prefer to spit than trying to swallow. I carry an oximiter and it doesn't seem to affect my oxygene levels. The only thing that seems to help the feeling is tying a moist towel around my throath for a little bit of pressure. (weird much?)
I went to the doctor about 8 days ago and he looked at my throat for the grand total of 3 seconds before declaring I needed a 10-day round of amoxicilin and 7 days of Predsim 20mg. I'm now on my eight day of antibiotics and I feel a little faint when I take it. I was also supposed to stop taking the Predsim, but I feel like it is the only think protecting me from the throath edema, since the antibiotics cleared my sinus, but are not working for this weird feeling in my throat. I'm thinking of stopping the antibiotics before I complete the 8 days, because I'm now afraid that the faint feeling means more. Should I do it?

So today I went back to my allergist and the first thing she said is that I could totally have an anaphylactic reaction because of my polen allergy. She just said it like that, two minutes into the consultation and with a very calm voice, looking straight at her computer. She also said I should only eat what is on the low-histamine diet and she also made another extensive list of things I shouldn't eat (basically all fruits and veggies) to avoid the tingling feeling. When I asked her what I was supposed to eat (I'be been living on a diet of meat, potatoes and rice and potatoes are starting to make my mouth tingle too) she laughed right on my face and didn't give a solution. She just straight out laughed. I felt like crying, since eating has become such a trigger to me I do it twisting my hands.
I was already on the verge of despair, but I soldiered on and asked her for something to protect myself from reactions, but unfortunately, Epipens are not available in my country. She said she wouldn't give me one anyway as I'm low risk for now. I don't feel low risk! I told her that the feeling of swelling in my throath and mouth was causing me to panic and that I needed at least an inhaler with some corticosteroid to help me keep it down. She refused me.

I have no idea what to do now. I'm going to use the last of my economies to go to another allergist this Thursday, but I have no ideia how to survive that far. At the end she threw me out because she had another patient and she told me to not leave the house to avoid the allergen, to not be alone ever and to not eat anything that is not on the diet. She washed her hands of everything, she said I could basically react at any time, but at the same insisted it was not serious. I feel like she now only crashed my mental health (and then she had to gal to send me to a psychiatrist to investigate my fear of dying), as I have a constant feeling of impeding doom following me everywhere, but also put a stop to my indepedent life. I'm now a house-bound, scared 35-year old baby depending on my family for everything.
In the end she tripled my anti-histaminics dose and that was it. I'm completely stumped. What do I do? How do I go on from now? How do I live with this constant voice telling me something right around the corner could just kill in 8 minutes? I have no idea how to go on. (And now I feel too dramatic, sorry)

I feel for you. A doctor that would laugh is not a doctor I would return to. One suggestion, instead of seeing another allergist, consider seeing an ENT - ear, nose and throat specialist.
Best to you!

From the USA…….I am so sorry that this is your life right now……I do know how you feel. I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and you should probably become very familiar with that. You learn to live on a low histamine diet and they teach you on line. The one I like the most is Dr Beth OHara and the other is Dr Becky Campbell . Look up both of them and you will never feel alone again. They also have what you have and diagnosed in their 20s or 30s I think. I have always had allergies and overkill reactions to certain things. The covid shots sent my immune system into this nightmare and I don’t beleive I will ever be out of it, although it is much better due to what I eat. Medical doctors don’t want anything to do with us…..they are fast to send us off to naturopaths as they understand it more. My reaction is all over my face….I get small dots of mast cell reaction on my skin and my face swells up …..I could barely get them to close and suffered the better part of a year w extreme fatigue and swelling and extreme reactions to any kind of pollen. I could also get that feeling in my throat that hurt like anything and the only thing that helped was carbonation. Even in a store I would run to the cold cases and get a diet anything to get that ball of swell to shrink. Sometimes pressing into a door frame. The ice cold carbonation gave me a method to deal with it. There are a lot of over the counter supplements you can take to help you and you are taught that on line, but I spent a great deal of money before I realized that Becky Campbell’s program of histamine relief in her supplements, was actually a cheaper way to go and know I had them covered. It sounds as if you are having internally what I have externally.,,With a little of it internally too. I can eat one wrong thing and get a reaction so I totally get it. And btw…..same is true of the millions who have MCAS around the world!……when it’s really bad it’s like long covid……brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, headaches, and lack of motivation to do anything. One of the great helps to me was a Cromolyn Sodium Nasal Solutions……..nasal spray!….on Amazon…..it kept my sinuses open and throat as well. It also gives me a brain awake, like coffee. Brain fog was gone. I also had a similar eye drops to clear my foggy vision……again cromolyn and salt……when the sores on my face got really bad, I used both sprays on my face and it calmed right down. It took me a long time of eating very very carefully and then adding back just as carefully…….one thing at a time and only eat whole real food. The problems are w the ingredients in any recipe. A year and a half later, I still have breakouts and I have to go back to the very essential food only. 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast, and some turkey or chicken for lunch, maybe a peach. Some Quaker rice cakes but only lightly salted type ,,,dinner last night was organic turkey and steamed broccoli . My body loves beef and heals quickly on the carnivore program diet. I am O+ blood so that may have something to do w it. I am a counselor and was teacher so I dug into this like science…..which it is. There is so much help for you on line…….but nearly none in a normal medical office. I’m here if you need me. I also want to say that I would keep Benadryl around you all the time. I take two to sleep and also in my purse at all times. It’s very cheap on line. Also the spray if you have issues topically. You are NOT alone by a long shot………..there are millions of us out here!!!! God Bless!

Thank you! That was really really helpful and I feel like there's a light at the end of the tunnel after all. I did what the previous person who answered told me to, and went to an ENT specialist today and he actually listened to me. He examined my throat with a camera and I have an ecography of my whole neck tomorrow. He also wants to check my thyroid and told me we'll keep investigating no matter what (he also very seriously told me I should ditch my allergist and find another one) . It was a vastly different experience.
Really, I have no words to thank you for the kind words and the whole lot of sources you provided me with. I'll start looking into them right away. But can you explain again the carbonation? Does carbonated water help with the swelling for you? I'll try it tonight.

Well, now I believe it is a matter of taking a deep breath and start finding the things and habits that work for me. Oh! And I'm also getting the Mast Cell Activation Syndrome tests this time! =D thanks a whole lot!

Hello! Thanks a lot for your answer and I actually followed your advice. The ENT was much, much nicer and actually looked down my throat with a camera and didn't dismiss any of my symptoms as imaginary ones. He couldn't find anything wrong at that moment, but he assured me we would keep looking and also asked me to do a ecography of my whole throat structure so we can see what we're dealing with. He also very sincerely told me I should ditch this allergist and look for a new one (which I did, I will see her in two days). He was nice, careful and calm and I actually feel much better knowing that my life is not, in fact, at stake.
Thanks a lot for your kind words, they helped a lot

Good Morning! Thank you so much for letting me know. You have just made my day! Sharing is critical and I learned that through my career in working with families of babies with disabilities. Connecting them to other families further along in their journey with their child to learn from them is so key to a supportive community that may offer something that we professionals were not aware of. Knowing that you moved forward in seeing an ENT that sounds like a compassionate, thorough doctor means so much. I pray answers will be found for you to help you heal and feel your best again.

Oh wonderful about the doctor! And yes, self educate and be the detective for yourself!…..it’s really all kind of fascinating and like a jig saw puzzle !…….the carbonation for me acted like a “rotar rooter” on my pipes, if you will, and cut all the phlegm in my throat which was part of the inflammation. And when it’s cold all the better for me as it shrinks what is swollen….again inflammation. The list of inflammatory foods are often different ….actually they are all differnt but will give you a starting place w the agreed upon safest foods. I have had my thyroid out and adenoids so the space in my throat is wide open. Before I went on my elimination diet, I would choke a lot and cough a lot….and I was very glad the thyroid and adenoids and tonsils were not there as I can actually imagine what that would feel like . To that end keep your sinuses open and I use Simply Saline spray by Arm and Hammar….the day and nightime, versions…..the salt spray of them dripping down the throat can help a lot w calming the throat. Also you might try boiling water and putting your head over it ….good old fashioned medicine that still works. Also Epsom Salt baths to relax your muscles everywhere. I do take Effexor time released for anxiety and that keeps anxiety in check 24/7 and anxiety disorders are often comorbid conditions w MCAS. I would take a look at that on line too…Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Very common in families esp the women and often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed!….this is not depression ….it’s a genetic condition . I have 5 members of one side of my family on the same meds in 3 different countries!! Check it out! And I will be anxious to hear how you are doing!! I’m cheering for you!!

Wow, I'm loving the tip on carbonated water. It really did help with some of the tightness and for some reason it helped me relax the roof of my mouth too. I hadn't even noticed it was so tight, so now I feel like I have a little more room to swallow and breathe freely.
I have been using a saline spray to help my sinus about 3 or 4 times a day and I also believe that helps to keep things working better.
About the anxiety I will definitely check it out, it's already on the plans. I've had panic disorder before but I thought I had overcome it. Before all of this I was actually in a very good place mentally and I haven't needed any meds in years. But this had really kicked my anxiety into high gear again and I even had a panic attack last week. It was awful, I felt like I was going to pass out and I wasn't really happy to remember that feeling. I keep thinking that lowering my anxiety levels to a place where it lets me think rationally it's going to make it much easier to start working on my diet and life from now on, because right now every little thing makes me anxious.
I've been taking prednisone 20mg for about 10 days now and I firmly believe the new allergist is going to ask me to stop tomorrow. I've been spiraling all day thinking about what can happen and how I might die from edema. Like, what the hell, why does our mind does this to us? It certainly works in mysterious ways and it can also certainly be a jerk. I'm getting tired of being bullied by it.
Look, I know I keep answering and it might get annoying, but reading your messages and the ones of other people here are really helping me not feel so alone, like there's a light at the end of the tunnel. I have no words to thank you for your time and your kind, kind words.

Wow, having a connection with people that are already halfway through their journey and have figured some stuff out makes a lot of sense. I already feel better by being here and listening to advice about stuff actual people have tried, instead of only having to rely on inconsistent sources you can find on the internet.
Thanks a lot for your kind words. I've already reached out to my old church group, which I left years ago because I was so busy, and I was welcomed back with open arms and no judgment. It's funny how I'm not that religious but having people around me helping me bear the weight made a difference, even tough I was embarrased about it at first. I guess it's everything in the community, right? Regardless, I will also look for support groups around me, so I can have more of that perspective you're talking about.
Thanks again for your kind words that made me see not all is really lost. I'll keep working on getting better.

You are being very brave!! Others around you have no idea how to help and as you found out some medical folks don’t either. But I feel like there are certain conditions like this one that are so narrow as to make us realize that we have to be our own advocates and you are young and have an entire life ahead of you so if you need to have an antiaxiety drug I hope you fight for it as the more stressed and anxious you are, the worse your condition can become …..for all of us !…..the nerves are already maxed out and the self talk becomes negative and fearful. I’ve had panic attacks ..twice….and I never wanted to have one again. EVER. Learning that is was also the thing stealing my joy made me decide to try Effexor. It gave me back my real self and not the self that was “awfulizing”….everything. If there was a real concern and it was perhaps a 20 in reality , I would jack it up to 80 and make myself and my loved ones miserable. I hadn’t ever been like that. But it can be dormant in a way and then a trauma of some kind sets it off. This is not about breathing correctly…..or doing hours of yoga. That can reach me but I needed to know that there was not a fear of losing control all of the time. And everything calmed and I became my self again…..I hadn’t seen her in about 10 yrs!!! And I was getting progressively more controlling, It acts like an electrical short….I was about 39 when I knew I needed to get balanced. I was asked here recently as I was going in for knee surgery, why I looked so much younger than my age……I told them I don’t live in a world of stress. Stress in the way you are living, is very hard on your body and can be a source for your body screaming at you. Do not ever think you are anything but brave as you are feeling like you are deeply stuck in mud and it’s hard to pick your foot up, but you are and you are moving forward and everything you learn will help you live a much happier life that you are in charge of. Don’t forget to gargle with warm salt water to calm the mouth and throat. And ask your doctor if there is any harm in taking Valtrex to help you calm your system down. It has been used for many decades to deter Shingles which is often triggered by nerve conditions and of course the Herpes virus . I first got shingles at 19 from children w chicken pox and you are probably vaccinated for chicken pox , but Valtrex is being used for many viral infections of the body that create swelling. You could ask for a trial dose and see . I have them in my system so I’m at risk to get shingles if my nerves or stress or anxiety is really whacked by something. So I take the Valtrex preventatively daily. Just a thought thats worth looking up and also seeing what a doctor’s response would be. It’s very positive in the States, they actually forget about the value of it at times and only think of it for shingles. I am glad about the carbonated drink…..and actually the caffeine also can help swelling go down…..you are moving forward so keep writing and remember that when the world out here helps you , we each benefit too because by helping you we are making valuable what we learned and passing it forward, just as you will do!……you will work our your own puzzle just keep up the deep breathing, or using sounds like ocean sounds for sleeping……please let me know how you fared at the Dr. I’m so glad you found a caring one!…..They can be magic!!!

I had a similar experience and researched "why does my mouth feel like it's on fire when I eat or drink and is swelling. Burning mouth syndrome was suggested by several reputable websites. Vitamin B-6 deficiency was the culprit in my situation; perhaps you could talk with your primary care or whoever you feel most comfortable with. I sent a note to my neurologist since I have Parkinsons and another suggestion was some of the drugs I take for that. we started with the B-6 and it took a while to get the dosage right but it is now under control. The ENT balked and fought the idea. My dentist was fabulous as part of the team offering Xulitol Mints (available in different brands) that sooth the mouth. Look up the information and take it with you to you doctor. You have information that most of them have never heart of. My neurologist had only had 7 cases in his 45 year career; but he was right on target with what tests to run to get to the bottom of the issue. Good Luck. Don't take NO for an answer. Your case may be totally different so please check with your doctor for affirmation,
