Can PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) be induced by vaccine?

Posted by kristem2020 @kristem2020, Jan 2, 2021

Good evening, I’ve recently been diagnosed with PMR. It came on a week after my flu shot October 23, 2020.

Has anyone experienced the same diagnosis after a flu shot?

Have found some articles on links between covid19 vaccine and PMR- some mention that flu vaccines can also be trigger. Can’t find the one that mentions flu but this one discusses covid vaccine reaction. https://www.cureus.com/articles/100523-an-unusual-side-effect-of-the-covid-19-vaccine-a-possible-trigger-of-polymyalgia-rheumatica

Last year I suddenly developed debilitating and painful symptoms - later diagnosed as PMR- after my fourth covid vaccine (Moderna). Possibly had the vaccine too soon after getting covid19 - a few weeks. It was a dramatic change - from fit and active life, to stiffness and v limited mobility. Symptoms managed now with prednisone & trying to taper off gradually. Good luck with your condition.

Yes, PMR can be brought on after a vaccine. Mine was after the flu vaccine in 2019.

Yes I got the flu shot on 9/16, within a couple of days I had pain in both arms, initially I didn’t connect it to the flu shot. By 9/28 I was at the orthopedic Dr!! Surely no councidence

Yes the flu vaccine can bring on PMR. Also it is rheumatologist you should be going to and report it to VAERS, the vaccine adverse event reporting system. Google it. Check with a vaccine attorney to see if you could possibly be awarded compensation.

Below I answered your question and gave some advise.

My symptoms started after the Pfizer booster — I had JJ before this without incident. I reported it to mfg and adverse event site.
I heard from a couple of my doctors there has been an increase in autoimmune diseases or flare-ups seen in their practices.

I developed PMR one month after receiving my second booster vaccine. There is another booster coming out in two months for people 70 and over.

I am very concerned about getting this booster because even though my PMR appears arrested, I believe it could flare up. Presently there are actual scientific studies that suggest that the vaccine can cause issues with rheumatoid arthritis.

I have lived alone for 18 years and enjoy it. It was very difficult to take care of basic needs when my PMR
was severe. I do not think I could deal with another relapse.

I am glad that we have medically assisted dying (MAID) and my son has copies of my will, power of attorney and health care plan. So , at least here in Canada, I have a choice especially with the new legislation.

I am looking for feedback to my initial question in the initial paragraph. I ask that no one please lecture me about MAID or try to impose their religious beliefs. I am comfortable with utilizing the services of MAID. Thank you.

My experience with PMR came after my Covid vaccination. No more vaccinations for me. I’m aware I can’t know there’s a relationship but at this point I’ll take my chances with Covid or whatever. I’ve lived alone for over 30 years and maintain a small farm; PMR has certainly made that more difficult. On the other hand it has forced me to be active which I feel is good for me physically and psychologically.
My plan is to take the best care of myself I can in terms of diet and exercise and work toward getting off medications.
