Posted by rtibbets @rtibbets, Mar 4, 2023

My wife currently has squamous cell carcinoma in her neck. We have dealing with our doctors for two years and feel now we are going backwards we looking into second opinion is there anyone here that has been treated at Mayo Clinic for a similiar situation and how was it for you.

What type of cancer are you being treated for?

I have been treated at Mayo Rochester for 11 years for metastatic SCC which originated in the skin in my ear. Dr. Katharine Price, the Head and Neck oncologist is amazing. The ENT surgeons and thoracic surgeon I had are also great doctors. I think Mayo Clinic is the reason I am still alive today. I have been on an immunotherapy called Cemiplimab for over 2 years and have no evidence of disease as of my last scan in October. All my surgeries have been at Mayo and all followup, except now I have the infusions every 6 weeks close to home. We drive 10 hours from Ohio to Minnesota and the quality of care there is worth every minute or our time. I highly recommend Mayo. Good luck to you.

Hi @rtibbets, I moved your question to the Head & Neck Cancer support group here (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/head-neck-cancer/). I did this so you can continue to connect with members who also have squamous cell carcinoma of the neck and in particular with members who have experience with Mayo Clinic for a head & neck cancer like @sepdvm @loli @jeffk @hrhwilliam and others.

You can request to get a second opinion from Mayo Clinic. Here's more info: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

How are you and your wife doing?

Diagnosed recently with Salivary Gland Carcinoma. Have had every scan available here in Dallas. Surgery scheduled in about 3 weeks.
I would like a 2nd opinion but would like for it to be done by televisit after the scans have been reviewed. Another issue is the cost. Doubtful that Aetna-Medicare would cover any of the cost and evaluating all the scans would take time and effort on the part of the Mayo Clinic. I would need approximate pricing "up front" to see if I could afford the second opinion. Aetna might possibly help, but I can't count on them. Any chance "Mayo Clinic" would try to work this out? If so who to contact?

How are you doing emotionally with this news? Has it been a long journey to get to this spot?

@pozwex, in addition to the information that @gingerw provided, I'll share that Mayo Clinic welcomes both new and existing patients for virtual and in-person care in adherence with federal and state executive orders and guidance.

Virtual care is available for out-of-state patients IF the provider you are seeing is licensed in the state where you live.

Video and phone visits also can be great options for appointments before, after or in place of face-to-face care. Appointment coordinators will recommend a virtual visit if it best fits your individual needs.

Appointment coordinators can also provide cost estimates and connect you with someone in the Insurance & Billing department.

I would call and inquire. http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
