Unknown Left side abdominal pain that lasts for hours

Posted by sadie17 @sadie17, Mar 4, 2023

Hello,

For the past month I have been getting dull pain in my left side of my abdomen that lasts for 6+ hours. This pain usually starts after meals. Sometimes the pain radiates up into my left side of my chest, my right lower abdomen, and my left shoulder blade in my back. I am very fatigued, sometimes have constipation and diarrhea. I also get nausea, have vomited before and usually run a fever while I have the pain. I have lost my appetite due to the fear of having stomach problems after I eat. I looked up my symptoms and it could be lots of things. The pain is worse when I sit up and better when I lay on my right side but very uncomfortable since the dull pain lasts so long. I eat very healthy, workout, and live an overall healthy lifestyle. I am also a in-shape 22 year old women although I probably lost a few pounds since this started happening. I am very confused on what is going on. It is becoming more frequent. Please if anyone has any comments as to what may be happening please help. I have never had my appendix removed or any X-rays done

I’m not a doctor but have you been checked out for diverticulitis?

Is the pain in the lower part of the left side of the abdomen? If so you might have diverticulitis. I strongly suggest you go to urgent care or emergency as soon as possible.

I had emergency surgery a year ago due to Divirticulitis. Same symptoms as you. Developed a perforated bowel resulting in loss of 1 foot of diseased colon and now wearing a colostomy bag. Please get checked immediately.

Hello, you definitely need to get in to see a gastroenterologist. It could be something serious.

@sadie17

As others said .. most likely diverticulitis. You should go to a gastroenterologist. Most of the time antibiotics take care of it, but if ignored it can get serious. It could be other things, but you need to go see a gastroenterologist to make sure. If you cannot see one soon go to an Emergency Room.

Do you still have your sigmoid colon? I experience discomfort every time I eat since removal of the colon during resection of my colostomy due to burst bowel. I had severe diverticulitis as well which is why he took the sigmoid colon. Couldn't find any place to attach resect to!! Maybe check that out if it applies. Otherwise if it is diverticulitis it is important to be diagnosed and treated right away.

Wow . some of the same symptoms i had without the vomiting. Had ct scan, hida scan and endo/coloncopy but no one menioned anythjng perforated. How did they determine it was a perforated bowel?

The perforated bowel happened suddenly at home. Horrible pain. Within 1 hour, was in surgery. 1 foot of my sigmoid colon was diseased and was removed. A Stoma had to be created. However, because not more then a foot removed, I am eligible for a Reversal. I am kind of undecided about this as recovery is not easy and doesn't always work....meaning some patients have had to resort going BACK to having a Stoma.

I you work out a lot, it could be an injury in your core. These are hard to pin down, they tend to move around a little as you describe. I regularly exercise my core. When I hurt it, usually from doing too much, I take a few days off, completely. Hope this helps.

I have this too...After eating and it can last hours..I am doubled over in pain and the pain always radiates to my left shoulder and the only thing that stops the pain is if I can force myself to throw up...Once I throw up alot my pain goes away.

I have had tons of tests but everything comes back negative and everything is fine. I always worry when I eat and especially if I am out somewhere where I know I will be in tons of pain and can't do anything about it. I did keto for 3 or 4 years and this started when I went back to regular foods. It has ruined vacations, parties and even just celebrating holidays...I dread going out to eat. If I eat only a little at a meal it doesn't happen and that is how I am controlling it.

I went back on keto and had very little issue but my doctor prefers me not to be on keto due to my cholesterol going up. So I am also looking for answers.
