Acid Reflux and its Symptoms: Are they chronic?

Posted by mwarenski @mwarenski, Feb 13, 2017

Does anyone have a variety of symptoms associated with Acid Reflux that are chronic? Such as chest pain, back pain, weird tastes, etc.? Please tell me your symptoms. A little worried here...thinking it may be something more serious.

Hi, yes I have an acid taste in my mouth, ear, throat, chest, and shoulder pain. Also, breathing issues. PPI’s do not work. I’m very worried as well. My father just died from esophageal cancer as a result of acid reflux. I’m going for another endoscopy soon. I live with chronic pain every day and the fear that I will soon too develop cancer. I have been to many doctors but can’t get any help. It seems the only suggestion they have is to take more and more of the PPI’s. I am worried that it not acid that I am refluxing, but pepsin. There is no medicine for that.

I am not a doctor, but it’s possible that you have “silent reflux” or LPR. From what I’ve read (again, not an expert) PPI’s do not work for this condition. Perhaps homeopathic methods and/or H2 blocker like Pepcid.
Others have mentioned books by Dr. Jamie Koufman or sign up for her blog.

Best wishes, Cindy

Thank you for your response. If there is anyone that had help from anything they have tried please let me know. The fear I have from what these symptoms are doing to my body has completely taken over my life and is effecting every aspect of my life. I am desperate to find a way to stop these symptoms and avoid getting cancer like my dad. Watching someone die from esophageal cancer is devastating. I’m a mom and still have young kids. I wish a medicine would be made for pepsin reflux.

Yes, he had what I would call classic acid reflux, Just heartburn. He took tums almost everyday for probably 20 years. He didn’t start a PPI or have an endoscopy until it was too late. I wish there was a medicine that could help my situation or even a test to confirm pepsin reflux. Very frustrating and scary.

I have basically a good control of acid reflux. After a number of endoscopes, and multiple tests I was prescribed Domperidone for delayed gastric emptying. This drug is only available in Canada through a doctor’s prescription but it’s worth pursuing if it is something that would help your condition. It has made a world of a difference in my case.

Thank you for your reply and sharing what helped you! I had a gastric emptying test done a couple years ago and it was normal, maybe I should have another one. What were your symptoms before you were diagnosed with delayed gastric emptying and started the medicine? Thank you!

Michelle, my main symptom was developing a really severe pain in the stomach. It came on suddenly during the night. However this was many months after I had been suffering acid reflux that was not being helped by a proton pump inhibitor medication. Following this and the stomach pain I was referred for tests including an endescope and subsequently prescribed a very high level of Domperidone that was gradually reduced to a maintenance level. This relieved both the reflux and the stomach pain. Today I am stomach pain free and mostly acid reflux free. Before being placed on Domperidone I had some heart tests including an ECG as Domperidone is not used for people with long QT syndrome. I hope you find a solution that works for your problem. Best of luck.

Hi Michelle,
My symptoms are very similar to yours. Were you diagnosed with GERD or LPR? I also found PPI’s had no effect on my symptoms. Could I ask what dosage of Domperidone you were prescribed, and how many times a day you have to take it?
Thank you for sharing your story, I will discuss with my ENT and see what she recommends.

Thank you,
Randy
