Silent Reflux or LPR

Posted by cmdw2600 @cmdw2600, Jan 27, 2023

Has anyone been diagnosed with silent reflux or LPR? This is a condition where there is no heartburn, but acid makes its way to the throat. I have had a sore throat/throat irritation for over two years.

Would like to treat without PPI and do what I can homeopathically.

So, just so I understand correctly, when you have LPR, can it also reflux up as high as your frontal sinuses. Because I am also suffering from constant nasal drip, and inability to breathe through my nose, which comes and goes, and is especially bad in the eve.. If I cannot breathe through my nose, I have a anxiety attack. I have self medicated with nose spray, Mucinex, Vicks, neosinephryn, Tylenal severe sinus, humidifier, Neilmed sinus wash, and if it helps, it is only for a very short period. If this is so, why does GI tell me they have never heard of this?? Some days I just sit and cry, and pray.

Hi,
Please YouTube and Google: apple cider treatment for LPR. Really gave me some relief from the symptoms you describe, as well as being a cheap solution!,,

The recommendation to use apple cider vinegar for silent reflux has no scientific basis and can make LPR symptoms worse. Bad advise.

Thankyou Cindy. I am going to check out Dr. Kaufman

I drink low acid coffee from Lifeboost, ordered online. It comes caffeinated or decaffeinated, dark, medium or light roast; several flavors, beans or ground. I found it helpful for my reflux along with eliminating alcohol and some foods.

If your non-medical attempts do not resolve the reflux, then you should treat it medically because untreated acid reflux can cause esophageal cancer. You can first try Tums and/or gaviscon, and if this is not enough then a non-PPI, such as famotidine. (H2 blocker) If these don't work, then you should go to a PPI.
Keep in mind that if you have throat irritation, even if you've started medication it will take a week or two for the throat soreness to go away, so you need to give it that chance to heal and then see if it gets better with the meds.

navia, I just want to say that I truly understand how you feel. This problem has truly put a damper on my life. The strange thing is that I was sent to ENT who said it was a GI issue, and to go back to GI. When I described my Sx. to GI and asked him if he ever heard of it, he said NO. I have been through all the tests except for the one you mentioned which he says is very painful. I have learned more from everyone on this site, than from this very large group of GI docs.I have read a lot about it. I can tell you that concentrated sugar products make it worse, especially chocolate. I can say that I have tried Mucinex for mucous relief and it has helped. I also bought a new cool mist humidifier for bedtime, and point it toward my face, and it has helped.I go back to see GI next month. I think I have received more help from people on this site than from the GI docs.Just my feelings. Take care and best of luck.

@cmdw2600 I've had GERD for years and have taken a PPI (pantoprazole). It helps, but not completely resolve the issue. Tried stopping the med and my GERD really flared up. I have a hiatal hernia as the cause of reflux - last checked 4 years ago. I don't like meds either and decline most, but the reason I like taking a PPI is because my GI told me some meds only help reflux while this one actually heals damage to the esophagus as well. Before I took it my esophagus was bright red. After, just a healthy pink. My bother passed away from esophageal cancer (Dx at stage III) at 59 and was told he had silent reflux. He had no idea. No symptoms. The past few months, I go hoarse right after eating no matter what I eat so I'm wondering about LPR and wondering what changed. That used to only happen after forbidden foods like tomato soup. Now it's after everything. It makes me feel weak and a little embarrassed to talk with a hoarse voice, but more importantly is a concern. It improves a couple hours after eating, but is a cycle all day long. I hope some solutions are working for you. Lori

Wow, Lori, thank you so much for sharing this information. I do notice my voice is worse after I eat. Wow! I have an appointment with a GI at the end of April and an ENT in June. It’s just impossible to get into specialists. I’m concerned as this started in August.
Grateful for all you have shared.
Very sorry for your loss. ❤️
