why Mayo?

Posted by jrvegan @jrvegan, Feb 27, 2023

People say I can get a real medical team at Mayo, with urologist, nephrologist, endocrinologist. Is that true and how does it work?

Is there such a thing as doctors giving you as much time as needed to ask questions and go over options?

My case is outside the textbooks; can anyone realize that?

Hi @jrvegan, Welcome to Mayo Connect. Why Mayo? I’m a bit biased because I am a continuing patient with Mayo-Rochester for the past 4 years. I can’t imagine going anywhere else when there is a situation that calls for complicated medical care. Mayo is known for their collaborative team approach to health care.

It is true about acquiring a medical team while at Mayo depending on the treatment necessary. My experience didn’t involve your particular needs with urology, nephrology and endocrinology. But during my lengthy journey with a bone marrow transplant, some issues presented themselves and they were quite complicated. I now have several specialists on my medical team. Each one was quickly brought into the picture in an incredibly short time when my transplant doctor requested. They’d all gather in the hospital room to discuss treatment and options with me while I required critical care. They also met with teams every morning before rounds to brief each other and discuss ongoing treatments. On my team I have my transplant doctor and his huge team, 2 neurologists, a heptologist, allergist, ophthalmologist, pharmacists, etc,, and the list goes on. They strategized and worked through my situation and arrived at a solution quickly.

You have to realize that doctors at Mayo are at the top of their field and respected world-wide. There is no chest-thumping or one-up-man-ship when they are working with patients. These doctors work together as a cohesive unit to provide the best medical treatment and care possible. During all of my visits, and there have been well over 100, I have never once felt rushed or dismissed by any of the doctors, nurse practitioners, nursing staff or any of the ancillary members who make that clinic run smoothly and efficiently.

So why Mayo? I sound like a walking advertisement. But I say, why not? What do you have to lose by being seen by top specialists in the world?

@loribmt is one of the many, including myself, who praise Mayo. There are many good stories, like hers.

I first travelled to Mayo over 40 years ago for a fifth opinion on a failed knee surgery. The great orthopedic surgeon reoperated, and today I can't remember the last time I had pain there. Whenever I have had a significant medical issue, and I've had them, I go there. I have encouraged family and friends to go there for many different reasons, and I have been thanked.

@jrvegan, you're in the kidney and bladder discussion group. So permit me to tell you that about 20 years ago I began seeing several local doctors for deceased kidney and bladder function, including urinating blood. I wanted to know the cause, so I could treat the symptoms. No one locally actually knew the answer. I went to Mayo, and my great nephrologist figured out that hypertension was causing chronic kidney disease. My great urologist diagnosed inflammatory bladder disease and has performed several procedures, but only when needed. To this day, when I return to Mayo, the two of them continue to work together on my behalf to maximize my quality of life.

For those reasons and many others, that is "Why Mayo".
