Shelby: check what radiation machines are available. Mayo does not have a MRIdian machine with 2 mm margins. The choice can impact side effects from damage to healthy tissue. They do have Proton but it is different. There is also cyberknife. Most RO’s will say the outcomes are the same but drill down about margins and protecting healthy tissue from one machine to another.

We are having radiation at Mayo LaCrosse. Its proton beam. Not sure how we can negotiate another type without travelling. For now, we have to trust in Mayo, but thankyou for your advice!

I've been reading this forum for a couple of years and posted before but no introduction yet. September 2020, initial PSA test was blind luck as it was recommended by a new doctor I saw for my fatigue. PSA was 9.29. Referred to Uro who felt nothing during DRE. (I felt plenty!) Biopsy two weeks later showed Gleason 3+4. Got the phone call with the bad news 11 days after my mother passed from breast cancer. At the same time my sister was one year into her battle with Leiomyosarcoma. She passed last year. I was in the process of completing my paperwork for retirement three months away. Four days into my retirement, I had RALP. Not the start of retirement I had planned. No incontinence, typical ED but have rebounded nicely. Post-op biopsy confirmed 3+4 Gleason with +EPE and +SM and PSA of 0.01. Uro said 70% chance of BCR. Oncologist said he thinks I'll have BCR "someday." Two years after surgery my PSA remains 0.01. Every day is my battle to keep the beast from growing back. Exercise, lost considerable weight and eat so healthy that I don't even enjoy eating anymore. (Kale is nasty stuff!) Two years ago I swore I will NOT die from PC!!! I'm winning so far but each day the battle continues...

I was mistaken, we are having photon radiation, not proton like mayo Rochester has. Any comments?

Not Colleen, but have some info. Developed pins and needles in my feet (neuropathy) and had difficulty sleeping. My primary care prescribed Gabapentin and this was supported by the oncologist who noted the benefits for hot flashes. It works for all of the above. Nice to have one script work for 3 complaints .

Spyguy again with a clarification. The Gabapentin HELPS but does not eliminate the symptoms mentioned. Good luck

I am 66.5 years old. Diagnosed about 4 weeks ago. PSA went from 7 to 9 in about 4 months. Biopsy had two positive results, 4+3 and 4+4. Bone scan was clear. Cat scan showed cancer confined to the prostate. Urologist recommends prostate removal. If I opt for radiation he would recommend both seeds plus external radiation along with ADT for 2 years. I am otherwise healthy except for a pacemaker for syncope. My pacemaker is not MRI compatible. I am just wrapping my head around all of this and trying to figure out what to do.

Many, including me, recommend Patrick Walsh MD's book " Surviving Prostate Cancer", which will provide a wealth of information and give you answers to many of your questions.
Also, the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF.org) has a free downloadable or hard copy of a tutorial on Prostate Cancer (PCa).
