COVID, Paxlovid and other treatments for COVID

Posted by dmbteach222 @dmbteach222, Jun 3, 2022

Hello-

I was diagnosed with COVID earlier this week and started taking Paxlovid last night. 3 doses in and I have horrible diarrhea. I have intestinal issues as it is, and I had my colon removed due to Ulcerative COlitis years ago. I am thinking that the COVID symptoms were starting to improve without the Paxlovid, and I am seriously thinking about stopping it due to the horrible diarrhea and stomach pain. What do people think? Is it ok to stop after only 3 doses? I think that the COVID will run its course as I am boosted and youngish (43). The diarrhea is worse than the COVID symptoms I have been having the last few days.

Can I take NyQuil while taking Paxlovid? I can’t find anything about over the counter drugs that can be taken while on Paxlovid.

Tested positive for Covid on November 17. Took five days of Paxlovid. Felt much better right away and recovered. On Monday, November 28, woke up with a sore throat and heavy congestion. Took a home test and was positive again. Went to my doctor and he prescribed a another round of Paxlovid. When I questioned him based on what I’ve already read he said as long as I wasn’t feeling too bad I should ride it out. That’s what I’m inclined to do if I don’t feel nearly as bad as when I first contracted it. Has anyone else had experience with the second round of Paxlovid.
Also, I spent time with family on Sunday Nov. 27 unmasked. Is it likely that I was contagious on Sunday testing positive Monday night?

Thank you for this reply and healing wishes - it seems I was being overly optimistic to think I would be over this in two weeks as if it was a common cold or the flu. It is actually good to hear that I am not the only one with lingering symptoms. I do have to say that some of it is starting to improve, but new symptoms seem to show up too. I don't like the idea of 3-6 months - but it helps me to have more realistic expectations. I have looked into some primary docs that were referred to me but none are currently taking new Medicare patients. I can continue to look but hate to just pick someone off the internet without knowing anything about them.
I too have been drinking teas and don't have much appetite, and keeping a log of symptoms
does sound like a good idea.
So thank you again for this response and for sharing your thoughts - I appreciate it.

Truly, based on reading about and knowing people who have had "long covid" try not to put a time limit on it. I know people who have been told 2-3 months to 11-13 months to where doctors simply will not give a time period. IMO, see a doc dedicated to working with long covid (e.g., long covid clinic) so you'll at least get someone who is hopefully making an effort to stay abreast of symptoms and treatments. Although not all clinics are part of a long covid clearinghouse, at least you should ask HOW they stay abreast of these things.

A very helpful website is Drug Interaction Checker (by Drugs.com). I just checked it and there are many different formulas of Nyquil listed on their site. Or you can call your local pharmacist and ask them. Sorry, I just noticed your question dates back to November 2022.

I too would like to have Paxlovid on hand just in case I get Covid again. I had a terrible time acquiring it the first time. Wish I had taken notes, but am slowly recovering from something i.e., shots, Covid or Paxlovid. Lots of continuing pain in joints with prior injury. The most painful, but least enduring was something similar to gout in my big toe. I could hardly walk, but it went away after several glasses of water? I eat a VERY healthy almost vegetarian diet which is very low in purines plus being organic. Very close to a Mediterrainian (pn) diet. The terrible pain in the big toe went to the toe next to it. Since water had worked, I drank a glass and within ten minutes the pain was gone. Go figure? I am slowly recovering from something including the headaches which I have never had for any reason. Could it have been the vaccinations or the Paxlovid? No one seems to know very much.

. Can I take over the counter antidiarrhea meds?

I had terrible diarrhea also my doctor said you do not want to stop it as it is helping the body get rid of unhealthy materials.

Has anyone tried taking Paxlovid to address long Covid? I found an article from November 7, 2022 in the NY Times that discusses this as well as one in The Atlantic from May, 2022.

I have heard Paxlovid as treatment mentioned before. I will try to access those articles. Once I am able to get into Long Covid Clinic here in San Diego, I will try to discuss all of the experimental options and their safety.
