Thanks for your help. Yes, I am scheduled for right ankle replacement on October 27. Of course being 81 years young, I am a little apprehensive about it. I am just interested in getting as much info as I can. It gets a little spooky as I am the only driver in the family and possiably being unable to drive for an extended period is a little concerning. I would like to introduce you to members @leonardwolfer, @kareniowa, @gwenie and @gene47 who have also discussed this same topic on Connect, in hopes that they will be willing to share their experiences with you.
Dr Kile replaced my right ankle on Nov 10. Due to my Diabetes, age and 270 lbs, I was 10 weeks non-weight bearing and in a hard cast. After that I was in a walking boot for one month. I was out of the boot Feb 22 and that was it. The only pain that I had was the evening of the surgery which was controlled by the pain meds at the hospital. I went home and never had any more pain at all. Once in a while I felt a twinge but that was all. Needless to say, I did keep the leg elevated and iced up most of the time but upon going to bed , I had no problem getting a good nights sleep. In my case, the biggest surprise was after being 10 weeks non-weight bearing, it was somewhat of a slow process to get back on my feet. I had to get over a little of the dizziness and just the ability to stand on my two feet again was an experience. But I am back on my feet again and cannot express enough gratitude to the folks at Mayo for the great job they did and plan on getting my other ankle replace this upcoming winter. Any other questions you have I would be happy to share with you.

The day following the arthroplasty, what will be my condition to move to my hotel? What kind of appropriate transportation is there from Mayo Clinic in Phoenix?

Thank you, Colleen. I will stay at an on-site hotel for the first few days and then move to one farther away in Phoenix. At the end of two weeks I will return to Mayo for my post-op check-up, and then return home to New Mexico.
Another question for those on this list:
* What were your experiences either driving home by car, or flying home by plane?
* (It would take me about 6 hours to drive home; although the flight is shorter, all the to-ing and fro-ing associated with boarding and de-planing, then driving from the airport would take me about the same amount of time.)

Anyone have idea how long it takes to recover from ankle replacement ??
