Any advice on how to deal with neuropathy caused by carelessness of a practitioner??

I have recently been diagnosed with sensory axonal peripheral polyneuropathy but have yet to discuss treatment options with my doctor.

Acupuncture didn’t help. Nor dry needling.

With the exception of regulation of your blood sugar, treatment for neuropathy with or without diabetes should follow clinical standards and being patient specific in regards to medications. What has helped me is gabapentin, one thing I have to mention is many patients have side effects and many times if you can tolerate the side effects for a few months they subside. Also I find that I have to be consistent
and take the medication on time to keep my pain controlled, if the pain gets out of control it is difficult to get it back to baseline. I have also found that a healthy diet with low sugar and no ETOH and regular exercise helps control the neuropathy pain. Hope you find what helps you, keep in touch.

Does everyone gain weight from gabapentin?

REPLY

@sullivantrish2
It is listed under potential side effects that you could gain weight or have fluid accumulation in your legs. If you are on other medications that cause weight gain such as steroids that might increase the probability of weight gain.

I’ll say that I personally have not gained weight in the 6+ years I’ve been on Gabapentin. I’m thinking it’s possible I may have gained a few initially, but taking the Gapabentin coincided with my sudden crippling by PN and complete cessation of all the sports and exercises that were a big part of my life up til then. So my body was readjusting to a decrease in activity at the same time. Today I am 30 lbs lighter than I was 6 years ago, and I know it’s not because of Physical Therapy… pretty sure it shouldn’t be because of the Gabapentin. I think it’s just another example of how we all respond differently to meds, and how all of this is so convoluted with everything else in our medical histories and life styles. I do everything Kim mentioned above with things we can control, especially keeping the Gabapentin on a consistent schedule or else it takes time to regulate maximal comfort again.
