PV and atrial fibrillation

Is it safe for people with PV being treated with baby aspirin and Hydrea to be put on oral anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation?

Hi @lwengel, this sounds like a really good question to ask your doctors. Sometimes you have to be the coordinator between specialies. I find that a pharmacist can also help answer questions about drug interactions.

Has your cardiologist recommended an anticoagulant? And do they know about your having polycythemia vera and the medication you're on to manage it? Does your hematologist know about the a-fib?

I have the same problem and my cardiologist doesn’t seem sure what to do. I would love a definitive answer.

I have had afib for fifty years and was diagnosed last year for pv. Cardiologists and hematologists agree to a px of eloquis as pv thickens the blood increasing risk of stroke or heart attack. A blood thinner counters that according to the mds I’ve seen. jjd

Hello everyone, i have atrial fibrillation at least that is what the cardiologist tol me, i was having a lot palpitation on and off, he prescribed xarelto rivaroxaban 20mg every night, of course am not to pleased, my problem is that i have a referral for a colonoscopy so of course for 5 days no blood thinner how safe is
it to have colonoscopy specially for 5 days not taking the blood thinner, i do appreciate an anser, maybe someone has/had the same problem, ty

I understand your concern for holding Xarelto due to your atrial fibrillation. A colonoscopy is an important diagnostic procedure and your physician provably feels it is warranted. The length of time to withhold Xarelto should be based on your doctor's recommendation with your input and shared concerns. My husband who also is taking Xarelto held it for 4 days prior to a colonoscopy.

I have been taking Eliquis for AFib for several years. This was ordered by my cardiologist. I was diagnosed June 2022 with ET JAK2. My hematologist told me I do not need to take aspirin because I am on a blood thinner.

When I had knee replacement surgery I had to be off Eliquis for three days before. No problem. Eileen

I have the sane question. So far refused to do it. Afraid of the bleeding and being off of heart meds. And problem with last colonoscopy and ended up with bowl retraining program. I am 80
