Muscle control, falling and slurred speech
Hello everyone, I would like to have a question regarding the problem of my dad. He is 64 yrs old and already retired from his job. He usually makes morning stretches and exercises around the house. The thing is out of nowhere while walking around house or just standing from a sitting position is he can't make his right leg work, if he is walking, the tendency is he will fall because he wasn't expecting of this casual lost of control(?). I don't know if it is also connected but I noticed that he's also starting to have difficulty on speaking, we can't understand the words that he is saying.

@jvill06, you are right to be concerned about your dad and he should see a doctor about these unexpected symptoms. As fellow patients and caregivers here on Mayo Clinic Connect, we can't guess at what is going on. It does sound like something neurological is happening.
Has he been to see a doctor or a neurologist?
Hi @jvill06 That has to be very frightening for your father to lose control of his leg like that. The other notable concern is a change in his speaking ability.
There are a number of movement disorders that can cause similar symptoms such as your dad is experiencing.
One that’s familiar to me is Ataxia. This movement disorder affects the part of the brain that controls coordinated movement. It can cause uncoordinated or clumsy balance, speech or limb movements, and other symptoms. There are many causes of ataxia, including genetic and degenerative disorders. Ataxia may also be caused by an infection or another treatable condition.
I’m only using this as an example. There is no way to know what’s happening with your father unless he’s evaluated by a doctor or neurologist. This is not something to ignore.
Has he seen his doctor?
