I am thinking that thick white mucus may be from irritation in your lungs. You could try Mucinex (pure guaifenesin with no other ingredients) to help thin it. Then use your incentive spirometer and a little exercise to get it moving so you can cough it out. If it stays in your lungs it becomes a breeding ground for germs.
