Does Anyone Have A Constant Buzzing Sound In Your Ears?

Posted by willie23 @willie23, Feb 4, 2023

My wife wanted me to ask the group if anyone has or ever had a constant buzzing sound in your ears? She is 71 and has worn hearing aids for several years. However, the buzzing sound was there long before she started wearing hearing aids. Has anyone ever experienced this sound and if so, any suggestions on how to get rid of it? Thank you for any help that you can offer her...Bill

My tinnitus is self music, usually singing but without word, and always familiar songs— Amazing Grace, other hymns, things like Swing Low Sweet Chariot… I have no idea how my brain is producing these specific songs. Sometimes the sound is just repetition of 2 or 3 notes back and forth. Soft enough that I usually think I’m hearing choirs practicing in the distance. Sometimes oddly there is no sound at all, so no tinnitus at times.

Correction: SPFT music, not “self music.” Typo.

No! I meant to type SOFT music.

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this, but I am so relieved I am not psychotic. I have BiPolar disorder and you can imagine what I thought. Hearing music no one else could, I stand amazed that I am not alone in this situation, and comforted by everyone who took the time to write. Thanks to everyone.

...I too am happy/sad to know others with this issue. Yes from the fist line of a Christmas carol, over and over again, to almost chanting and I try and decipher the words but cant. An odd thing, I have a short nap every afternoon as dont sleep well at night, and afer the nap every single dayits this same chanting type "music" - at other times during the morning, evening, even nighttime it can be anything and everything, but why I wonder every single mid afternoon nap - so I was reding that there are two types of ear music... one that is random, which is most of mine, and one that is "set off" by a true sound - so I think every mid afternoon there is a train going by or something daily and it sets off this one! The other day for first time phone was ringing and I didn't get it.... but it stopped ringing in my bedroom but I could hear it in another room - but it wasn't ringing any longer. The brain is mysterious for sure and I too was relieved to hear it is not a mental health condition! It is upsetting though. New audiologist first zoom meeting and she had some very good suggestions, no, cannot "cure" my tinnitus or hyperacusis but using cognitive behavioural therapy etc. I don't know if I will be successful but will try... she mentions the web site American Tinnitus Association so will check that out too. http://www.ata.org .. havent tried it yet... Valerie,
Thanks for suggesting Amer Tinnitus Asso. I’ll look into it. The music I hear is not constant. Occasionally I will abruptly realize that I have no music in my head. None whatsoever. There is no reason for it to come or go, no triggers. Fortunately the voices, usually men in a chorus, are beautiful, and I can never hear actual words to the songs. I usually ignore it as though it’s music “piped in” from somewhere, and I’m grateful it’s soft and beautiful.I don’t usually stop and focus on listening because I don’t want it to distract me. If I accept as an odd fact that it is beautiful, that helps me tolerate the oddness of the situation. I wonder how my own brain is creating these particular songs. Until now, I haven’t tried to learn about the condition. I also have ADHD, and I don’t dare let myself turn my attention to such an absurd thing as music that only I can hear. I already have enough trouble staying focused and on track.
I never knew anyone else had “musical tinnitus.” I wish you well!

Oh yes. Tinnitus began about two yeats ago and I am now 81. I’ve had diminished hearing over the years. So much ‘research’ regardiing tinnitus but no clear cut solution. When I wear my aides not aware. When I meditate sometimes not aware (and this without my aids). My audiologist is great. So wearing phonax for little over a year. Please share more. Would love to be connected. Take care. Carol e. Sandytoes41@gmail.com

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. This morning I had to put up with my 'musical ear' playing "Kansas City Star' by Roger Miller over and over and over. 🙂 I was able to switch it after a while to something even worse. Have been concentrating on writing for the past few hours on my computer so it's all gone now! It does help to stay busy with something that involves thinking!

For those who are concerned about and interested in tinnitus, I also suggest you go to http://www.hhf.org The Hearing Health Foundation is a research organizations that is doing considerable research on tinnitus.

WOW, either I’m lucky or not, my tinnitus is a problem that I seem to have forever. I do not hear music, just that constant buzzing. Am I missing out.
I have pretty much learned to ignore it, but as I write this in the unite of my living room the buzzing is quite Loud.
I think you just have to live with it., sorry!
