Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

My gastroenterologist recommended NOT performing anything invasive like stretching the esophagus or any sphincter. I still have sticky phlegm and exudate when I blow my nose. After I eat my nose needs to get rid of colleting mucus and so I gently blow and --sticky mucus! Two days ago was the last time I threw up my breakfast when a sudden cough hit me. Advice is to chew food vey well, put a small amount in the mouth, [smaller than usual] and in between eating morsels of food, take a mall drink of water [like a large sip]. That will help keep everything down and digestion can flow better. RE: NAVAGE---NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE AS CAN CAUSE SMALL CAPILLARIES TO BURST--IE: GIVE A BLOODY NOSE!! And that an take awhile to stop or a person could have to get the nose packed by an MD.

Reading through all of these comments has at last made me realise I’m not alone in awful choking thick mucus in throat. Had COVID in December 2022 then developed post nasal drip. That has really become very thick and stayed white ie;not bacterial. OTC medications have not really helped nor sadly any prescribed nasal sprays steroid or antihistamine nor asthma treatments. Not aware of hiatus hernia problems. Some days I just can’t swallow or breathe easily, what does help a bit are sipping very hot cordials Even taking to sleeping propped up and have a thermos to take sips of hot cordial through the night as it’s keeping me awake anyway. Would a visit to ENT help? From England .

i never have had any problems using the Navage, i do know you need to use distilled water and do not have it too hot/warm...that can cause issues with the capillaries in the nose..my phlegm is more the color of elmers Wood glue, yellow..and sticky like that...an ENT suggested sinus surgery which i won't do, it's only a temporary fix...for me..keeping my sinuses flushed helps to keep it from building up too thick to the point of throwing up, gagging, airway blocked...so on. i know covid has really made my sinuses a mess and the ENT says the are chronic....it's always a mess right after i eat or drink anything, other then building my immune system, i'm planning to check my acid/alkaline ph. i know having a ph with too much acid can not be good...if possible i will use medication as a last thing....i refuse to letting this demon virus win...hope to all, we have a mess to get through,,,HUGS!!!!

Me too. Nothing really helps. A choking cough.

Yes. I have been experiencing this for over two years. It's miserable. Throat lozenges with pectin helped somewhat until I got Covid a second time. Now nothing helps. Seen all sorts of specialists but nothing has worked. Thankfully I'm beginning to see some scholarly articles and I am hoping that a cure will be developed. Good luck!

I'm thinking of getting a Navage but I want to make sure it works for Post Nasal Drip and phlegm in the throat. I have no stuffy nose.

I,too, am thinking about the Navage. If anyone has had significant relief from using it, please let us know.I’m having so much discomfort from the mucus in my throat but I have no stuffy nose or problems with my nose. The constant clearing my throat is so bad. I almost never get a break from it. It started 2 years after Covid. This is the 3rd year. The phlegm seems to come up from my throat, not my nose.

I've been struggling quietly with tickle throat and nasal drip for almost a year now after my first covid in May last year, and it got worse after second covid in October. I am also having crazy heart palpitations since covid. I am glad I have read this chat, good to know I am not alone. NOT taking any medication, but Netty pot helps. Also, wanted to share with you all what works best for me. The rebounding exercise (jumping on a little trampoline) followed by the ice bath (about 10 min) provides a relief. I do this 2-3 times a week and it helps a lot. Some days are better, some days are worse. I am hoping it will go away one day. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

Mine seems to come from my throat also but my dr. said it all comes from the nose. I am doing nasal irrigation with NeilMed and I add some baby shampoo to it. Look it up. It's gaining traction as a possible treatment option. I quit taking Sudafed and Mucinex. They work somewhat but I don't want more meds.

I’m a retired doctor GP casualty and sports medicine one. I also trained inWestern medical acupuncture primarily for pain conditions in athletes. I could use this at the Paralympics to good effect.
I decided to self acupuncture re phlegm build up. Although I still sipped hot drink at night to thin phlegm amazed I got through 7 hrs sleep when I’d only been able to achieve 2-3hrs. It may be a fluke as not everything responds to it.
I will try it a couple more times this week and record its results.
Be very careful don’t take yourself off to anyone who isn’t qualified, in UK you should be a member of BMAS with a dipmedAc diploma at least. I’ll keep you posted if it fails or succeeds again.🤞
