Switching from one antipsychotic to another safely

Posted by happy90 @happy90, Feb 4, 2023

Hi, how do I switch from Seroquel XR 100 mg (I've been taking it for a month now) to Abilify 10 mg safely please? For your information, I also take Sodium valproate 1000 mg. Does anyone have an experience with this to share with me please?

You want to switch antipsychotics, or your doctor is directing you to? What is the reason behind the switch? Any time you are changing medications, it is best to do it with the overview of your medical team.

Looking forward to hearing more from you as you share your story.

Hi, thanks for your replay. To be honest, I would like to change it on my own and go back to the prescription that preceded it. As for the reason, it caused a significant increase in my weight, an increase in triglyceride, LDL, and a decrease in HDL, in addition to that after conducting medical tests, it was found that I had hypothyroidism, so I decided to change it. I have another question that I would like to know, please. Is taking Seroquel XR for a month considered a long period of time?

As a retired nurse and trying to do this without the assistance of your doctor is impossible. All this symptoms your describe are known adverse effects of Seroquel and a few of them are also the same adverse effects of Abilify. Your doc switched you from Abilify previously to Seroquel for a reason, has that resolved or has the Seroquel done the job and you’re unhappy with the side effects? These are both powerful drugs and should not be prescribed to seniors especially if debilitated. Hope you work it.
