I have been diagnosed with “silent reflux” as they have found stomach germ in my lung. I have never taken medication; I’ve had to make some lifestyle changes and diet changes to reduce the occurrence of it. I have never had any felt symptoms. I could share some how I treat it if you are interested.
I am going to the GI tomorrow. Can you recommend any specifics that I should ask about in regard to silent reflux or asthma and reflux?
Thanks in advance.
I have silent reflux, Mac and Bronchiactisis. I used to cough a lot but since I started the Big 3/Nebulizing 7% Sodium Chloride/Levabuterol, Autogenic Clearance and bought an elevating bed, it has really helped. I became very strict with my diet by only drinking low acid coffee, no food after 6:00, cut out spicy and fried foods, carbonated drinks (except for an occasional Diet Dr. Pepper) and no alcohol. I took PPI's off and on for years to no avail so I quit completely and can really see the changes 100%. I am going to NJH in May and can't wait!
You can diagnose LPR (respiratory or silent reflux) via a transnasal scoping done by an ENT. A low acid diet, alkaline water, Gaviscon Advance are some of the tools you can try to address it. You can get more details at Dr. Koufman's web site: https://jamiekoufman.com/. At this link you can read about a person's consult with Koufman: https://www.reddit.com/r/acidreflux/comments/x16q1h/lpr_i_paid_500_to_talk_to_dr_jamie_koufman_so_you/. I am doing several of the recommended things, and also am experimenting with putting alkaline water drops up my nose. My postnasal drip is getting better. Still have periodic sore throat but am only 2.5 weeks into trying this advice.
After trying traditional medicines, homeopathic methods and dietary changes for the past nine months with no effect, I will be having the Bravo meter implanted via endoscopy this Friday. My new GI doctor, who is a good listener, explains that we need to know the PH of my digestive tract in order to best treat what I have felt to be silent reflux resulting in chronic sore throat. But it could be low acid, who knows. I will report back after having this device in me until early next week.
Hoping this will be helpful to others. Cindy
I had constant sore throat with gerd. Barium xray shows a lot.
Question to those diagnosed with LPR, do you find that your symptoms are worse 1st thing in the morning, gets a little better during the day and then becomes even worse later in the eve. I sound like I have laryngitis early eve. and have a chronic cough, and feel like I am choking on my secretions. Then I panic because I cannot breathe through my nose.
My symptoms are there all day. I appreciate your note as this is how I feel. Struggling with finding answers. Comfort in numbers!
Thankyou for your kind input. I did not mean to imply that it went away during the day, it just seems to be noticeably worse in the morning and in the late afternoon and early eve. When I saw ENT he literally said this is not an ENT issue, you need to go back to GI. and he did nothing. The GI Doc said " I am ordering two tests, and if they don't show anything, then I can order a third test which is very painful, and you cannot be sedated for it, so think about it." He made me feel like I might be exagerating, and warnining me of "Punishment". Next time I saw the PA and she switched my Prilosec to Prevacid as if that might make it better. It did not. I see her again next week. All I can say is that she is much kinder than the GI Doc. But I think I need to shop around.

@cmdw2600 I've had GERD for years and have taken a PPI (pantoprazole). It helps, but not completely resolve the issue. Tried stopping the med and my GERD really flared up. I have a hiatal hernia as the cause of reflux - last checked 4 years ago. I don't like meds either and decline most, but the reason I like taking a PPI is because my GI told me some meds only help reflux while this one actually heals damage to the esophagus as well. Before I took it my esophagus was bright red. After, just a healthy pink. My bother passed away from esophageal cancer (Dx at stage III) at 59 and was told he had silent reflux. He had no idea. No symptoms. The past few months, I go hoarse right after eating no matter what I eat so I'm wondering about LPR and wondering what changed. That used to only happen after forbidden foods like tomato soup. Now it's after everything. It makes me feel weak and a little embarrassed to talk with a hoarse voice, but more importantly is a concern. It improves a couple hours after eating, but is a cycle all day long. I hope some solutions are working for you. Lori
