My platelets are 120000

Posted by kareem @kareem, Jan 25, 2023

I was a normal man until got ill with covid19 2021 after i recovered i found my platelets 130000 then 122000 after taking the vaccine. I went to doctor who made me to take B12 and folic acid until platelets became 150000. The problem that after i got influenza vaccine and titanous vaccine after injury platelets became 112000 !!!! Again starting taking B12 and folic acid , it became 120000 and i bought b12 from Puritan pride and still take b12. The question is there any problem with that??

Hi @kareem, It looks like your platelet level has been on a little roller coaster ride. Your doctor had you taking B12 and Folic acid which brought your numbers back up into a normal range again and then you were able to stop taking the vitamins and Folic acid.
Your platelets took a little dip after a flu and tetanus vaccine but have again recovered. You’re still taking B12 and you’re wondering if that’s ok?
That is a question best answered by your physician. There isn’t any toxic level to taking vitamin B-12 but it would be a good idea to have your blood serum level checked to see if you still need to be taking the vitamins.

Depending on your age, your platelets are hovering at the low end of “normal”. So make sure you tell your doctor if you experience slower clotting time with a nick or cut, if you bruise easier or have any unexplained bleeding.

I posted the platelet range table below so you can see where your numbers fall.

Male. Female
60–69 150,000–300,000 165,000–355,000
70–79 130,000–300,000 165,000–300,000
80 and over 120,000–300,000 165,000–300,000

You can ask to have a blood serum check for Vitamin B-12 at your next blood draw if your doctor thinks it’s necessary.
How frequently do you get your blood tested?

I am 38 years old. In fact i love drinking Turkish coffee after breakfast two hours. Loving eating zero fat cheese , yoghourt and zero fat milk. No sugar on drinks. Protein from poultry and milk with no eggs. My platelets never be at this level before either Corona virus or vaccines. Even vaccines like influenza vaccine never reduce platelets for 20 years now any vaccine drop my platelets. My platelets before 2020 never be less than 200000 or 300000. I never measure b12 level in my blood but in winter i am mooning from the cold and nerves of my arms are very week from years that improve with taking b12 orally with meals. I am asking am i ok?? Can i take influenza vaccines yearly as i did for last 20 years?? As i am taking it from age of 17

Hi Kareem, I found these articles for you.
The first is regarding foods which can help increase your platelets; Vitamin C in citrus fruits being one of them.
https://www.healthgrades.com/right-care/blood-conditions/8-things-that-can-increase-your-blood-platelet-count.
Also, an article from the National Institute of Health regarding, “Nutritional zinc increases platelet reactivity”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1951315/
Zinc is an important element in our diets and usually we consume enough daily for cellular activity. Taking too much as a supplement can have some unpleasant side effects.

Just to give you a little more information on zinc, this article was informative.

Hi Kareem, I’m loving your after breakfast habit of drinking Turkish coffee for 2 hours! What a great way to start the day. I can’t drink caffeine anymore so I’m a little envious of your routine. 🙂. Your diet sounds healthy and you are obviously very proactive with your health.

Since Covid 19 and its variants is such a new virus, medical scientists are limited in the amount of data available as to the broad scope and impact the virus plays in longterm health. In our forum we’re seeing a few members whose platelets have been effected by covid. It is possible that this is what occurred with you. That again, is something to talk over with your doctor.
It appears your numbers have leveled out for now, though lower than they’ve been in the past. The good news is that you’ve seen them regenerate.

You’re doing everything you can to stay healthy and the Vitamin B-12 is helping you. So if your doctor is good with you continuing to take it then there’s no reason to stop. From what I’m reading in different articles, there’s no toxicity from Vitamin B-12 supplements. What your body doesn’t use, it flushes from your system.

Having the annual influenza vaccine is really important but I can see your hesitancy if this has an affect on your platelets. If this were me, I think what I’d do is request a blood test a month before you’re ready to get the vaccine, to make sure the blood numbers have improved, for your peace of mind and then ask your doctor advice on the vaccine.

You sound very healthy so I wouldn’t be too concerned. But I can understand your alarm with having this change in your blood numbers. So just keep your proactive approach to staying healthy and maybe have a blood check twice a year. What was your doctor’s recommendation on future blood work?

Kareem, you’re young, healthy and have your entire life ahead of you. Try not to worry about ‘what ifs’. That’s just a stressor and robs you of time when you should be enjoying life. Knowing that I helped give you hope and encouragement, well, that just made my day. Thank you. 😊
I’d like to know how you’re doing along the way so keep in touch, ok?

My platelets go as low as 7 I have to get platelets at least once a week and my hemoglobin is about 8 to 9 I also get blood once a week . My doctor is trying to find out what is causing this. He is treating me for aplastic anemia , not sure if that is the problem. Wish we could get an answer to this problem. Sylvia
