Internal Hemorrhoid

I had an internal hemrhoid removed a year ago. 6 weeks after the surgery I developed a terrible dry sandpaper discomfort. Surgeon has been back in twice. Says everything healed great. Creams etc do not help. Going insane. No relief

Hi Lori,
Oh my goodness, first of all I hope that your cancer has been eradicated. I can't even imagine what you must have gone through. And secondly, thank you for answering my hemorrhoid question. Every now and then things just don't feel quite right. I don't know much about hemorrhoids and from what I understand they can swell. So I have been doing sitz baths every now and then to try to shrink them. But I get worried about having an impacted stool.

I have not hesitated to call my gastro Dr whenever I'm concerned. I think every receptionist in the office knows my voice by now. But I suffer from anxiety and all these other things really make me nervous.

@judy75 I believe sitting for long periods can exacerbate both external and internal hemorrhoids. If you have to sit long periods of time, a donut cushion could help. You can also get the inflatable kind to take along with you if you travel a lot.

Internal hemorrhoids- is it normal to sometimes feel the internal hemorrhoids. I had some harder stool today and seemed to strain a bit more and now I seem to feel the internal hemorrhoids. I get the urge to go but nothing happens. With a history of diverticulitis I know I need to try to go when the urge to go is there. But it’s like now the hemorrhoids are just flopping around - or that I can seem to feel them. Or maybe it’s not even the hemorrhoid but some stool that is stuck.

Oh gosh, there are so many awful things that are related to the gut, it's so scary and can be so painful, not to mention inconvenient as it's hard to schedule fun things as you never know how you are going to feel. I've had divert three times and resectioning has been mentioned. I'm now dealing with c-dif from the antibiotics of the divert I had back in late Feb. But the internal hemorrhoids feel weird as you don't really know if you are constipated or if the hemorrhoid is swollen. I take a sitz bath now which apparently helps to shrink them.

I am currently deciding on this resection surgery. Been dealing for years with diverticulitis and constipation.Yarrow ointment is a natural product to help hemorrhoids and their discomfort.

Please follow your doctor's recommendation to treat the strep. Strep, if left untreated can be extremely dangerous. I wish I could remember the program I was watching (one of the news programs), they interviewed a woman who had strep that was untreated, and she ended up losing a few fingers due to sepsis from the strep infection. This is nothing to take lightly. Good luck to you. Maybe eat a lot of yogurt while you are taking the antibiotic??

I had some bowel problems a while back from antibiotics. Fortunately, when I contracted a rather a nasty ear infection that went so far as to cause me dizziness and loss of balance, my primary doctor came to my aid by thinking outside of the box!!!. He ended up giving me an injection of antibiotics every other day for a total of three injections and that approach got rid of the ear infection while saving me possible bowel problems. Maybe your doctor could consider this approach....

I am sorry to hear about your current plight. I was not aware that getting medical care in Canada was so onerous. Do you have any representatives in your province that you could contact for more emergent care? Do they have any urgent care clinics there in your province? Do you have any relatives or friends that you could help you get the care you need?

@judy75 You have my empathy! Anything amiss with the digestive tract is a “pain in the butt”, pun intended. I’ve not had C-diff or diverticulitis but I did develop an internal hemorrhoid during all my cancer treatment/chemo.
To answer your question, yes, an internal hemorrhoid can cause the stool to get stuck...behind the hemorrhoid. I needed some assistance by way of an enema while I was in the hospital. Let’s just say it was very effective in short order. Due to my platelets being extremely low at the time, I had to wait days for my platelets and white blood count to go up before my oncologist gave the ‘go ahead’ to my nurse. So, you can imagine my relief and many giggles after delivering what felt like a 9 pound baby. 😂.

Being at home, perhaps try a suppository or there are enema kits. Just be cautious and maybe ask the physician/NP, who has treated you for the C-diff, if this is something you can try. Don’t be embarrassed to call and ask for advice. Best of luck to you!

I am wondering how many on this thread are doing now. I hope things have improved over the last couple of years.

I wondered if i could get some input on internal hemorrhoids. I have struggled with chronic constipation for over a year, but managing with high fiber, water, exercise, Metamucil and Miralax. So, no real straining now. Multiple BMs daily.

My 2020 colonoscopy showed internal hemorrhoids, which was a surprise, since I had only been aware of 1 external hemorrhoid that surfaced 3 times in my life. That is now gone, since it thrombosed last year, burst and faded. No polyps,

Fast forward to recently. Can you describe the pain from internal hemorrhoids? Is it possible to have severe pain in rectum for 3-5 minutes and then no pain for days? Then it reoccurs . I’ve had no pain with BMs during this time. Just random times. No bleeding. I have an upcoming appointment with colorectal surgeon. Trying to make sense of it. I’ve read about something called proctalgia fugax.

I get my hemorrhoids' clipped out by my Naturopath from time to time. In and out no problem, very little discomfort. Glad you have your regularity under control. I'd suggest contacting Dr. Hubbard, ND at 1-888-664-6662 or 503-786-7272 in Milwaukee/Portland, OR He is with a great group and I have been to him over several years. With my last colonoscopy in December 2023 I learned I have a redundant color or one that is longer than normal. That explains why I have had constipation problems nearly my whole life of over 71 years. This procedure is way less hassle than the AMA route. Good luck, @Farmer Smith
