Has anyone had the PSMA-PET scan? Was cancer found?

Posted by hector13 @hector13, May 12, 2022

My prostate was removed 5 years ago. Two months ago, my PSA went from 0.00 to 0.09, and this month the PSA increased to 0.2. My urologist believes I am a candidate for the new PSMA-PET scan approved in 2020 that is more sensitive than previous scans in detecting small tumors. Has anyone had this scan? If so, what was your PSA at the time and was the cancer found?

Yes, Dr Kishan at UCLA was really great along with the staff, absolutly top notch. I was in a trial using the VewRay. PSMA was undectable at 0.25 PSA but the trial was using SBRT for this type of situation which was in the past used primarily for actual tumors.

Recap: My Gleason 4+3, cancer returned after prostatectomy then started 6 mo. ADT with Orgovix then UCLA ViewRay SBRT treatment. Now 5 months after SBRT PSA 0 still waiting for effects of Orgovix to wear off and have testosterone return, fingers crossed as my ride with ADT hasn't been very pleasent at all...

ADT & Radiation concurrent tx beginning following RP.
Orgovyx: I am starting 4 mos tx; would you detail your side effects over time.
Radiation: 38 txs will begin soon as mapping is completed. Same Q about side effects.
RP Aug 2022; initial PSA 0.19 @ 90 days; 0.18 25 days later on retest.
I understand that everyone's individual responses are different. Trying to anticipate journey with dual tx. Will need to drive 1 hr 15 min each way for radiation for 8 wk tx.

Hello. I had a PSMA PET scan done almost a year ago. PSA was .25 at the time. Nothing was found. Best of luck.

I just completed ADT and Erleada for 6 months then RP then 6 more months of ADT and Erleada at UCLA Westwood. My PSA went from 9 to .01, my testosterone went to -6. I had a Gleason score of 9 and we are hoping for a cure. The process was not bad, the worst side effect was very tired, poor sleeping , some depression and a small rash in the 11 th month. If the cancer comes back Dr Donin and Dr Reiter at UCLA said that they would probably put me back on ADT for some period of time and I am ok with that , but I hope that the cancer does not return. Good luck to all of us!

Thank you for responding. Hope you do very well and are able to avoid additional tx.

My cancer is stage 3a; with Gleasons 8 & 9 and EPE; last preop PSA 7.5 (postop .19).

Began Orgovyx Jan 6; radiation scheduled for Jan 13 canceled because mapping not satisfactory to Rad Onc (hip replacements interfering; repeat PSMA PET scan in 3 wks; had to STOP Orgovyx after 7 doses to try to have accurate scan [no science to guide here]).

So I am in "treatment limbo", and less than comfortable with delay.

Best to you, and all that are inflicted.

It is a struggle. I am 75. I am sure that the cancer will come back as it usually does. When and if it does come back, considering my age, I will carefully weigh the effect that treatment has on my life and the probable benefits of treatment. My sister suffered terribly with chemo and I have learned from witnessing that.

I had similar circumstance. Several years after RP and psa's <.1 it suddenly went to .2, Oncology Radiologist sent for the new scan, I went to .3 by the time of scan. They found a level 3 spot which means it's inconclusive, but they seemed to focus on it for sure, I wish I had had it a couple weeks sooner, but my primary care acted like a .2 was nothing critical. He didn't know. The sooner they treat, the less potential spread, imo. I even suggested wait until mine rose higher, but he explained, yes we may see it, but it may not be as curable. I just had my 6 month test after ceasing Orgovyx and Blessed to find out its still undetectable at my first 6 month test. I did a test immediately after radiation and 6 month of Orgovyx and it was undetectable with ultra sensitive PSA test. That Orgovyx is some effective stuff, might of got psa very low by itself. IDK.

Am frustrated lost writeup 3 times just before posting so made a hard copy ad a file. Sorry if inconvenient.

I go with the more aggressive treatment. The side effects were manageable, and the sooner they hit the area with radiation, the less likely I believe for micro metastasis. I'm surprised they didn't hit the one lymph node... just my thoughts. Best wishes for your recovery!
