Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

My doctor strongly recommended Prolia and I said no due to my experience with reactions to several drugs and I did not like the idea of it being in my system for 6 months and the list of such awful possible side effects. The doctor sent a registered letter to my house documenting my refusal. Needless to say I changed doctors. It made me feel he was getting a kickback on that expensive drug besides disregarding my concerns.

Wow...that is unbelievable and did not realize doctors get kickbacks from medication. How can you ever trust them? My endocrinologist is also insisting I have to do something after Forteo.....strongly suggested Reclast or Prolia. I agree I have to do something but how do I know what the right choice is? I also am getting a second opinion from a rheumatologist next week.
Have you seen your new doctor yet .... if so, what did he say?

I was surprised to hear that your doctor encouraged you to get a medication for a condition you have not been diagnosed with. So finding another doctor with more experience with osteoporosis (like an endocrinologist) is a very good idea.
There is a lot of professional information out there on this medical condition. Have you had a bone scan?
Once you get a confirmed diagnosis for any medical condition, then you can start considering your options.

Yes, I have had several bone scans. The most recent one last June which shows, as all the others did that I do not have Osteoporosis.

I have not been to a new doctor as it took some time to choose a new one. I really checked them out. I remember several years ago when the fact that doctors were getting paid by drug companies for prescribing their drugs to patients was in the news and supposedly it was going to be stopped. Evidently it was not stopped as they are still at it.

I am glad you are getting a second opinion. Please read everything you can about the different drugs that are suggested to you by your doctors. I made a big mistake by not reading about Prolia before I got the injection.

I read up on Prolia too and refused the treatment. I was really annoyed with the endocrinologist for not explaining the full potential side effects to me, except that I might feel sick for a few days after. I later found out that my calcium levels are fine and should not be taking any calcium supplements as doing so could cause other problems. It’s so hard to know what to do. Since I exercise and have a good diet and take a multivitamin, I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing.

My doctor told me he's putting me on Prolia. Did you change your diet and exercise regime along with Prolia to achieve much improved DXA results?

Could you share how much your spine improved on Prolia and what supplements you take if any? I started Prolia 10 months ago. I am hoping it helps.
