Aside from medication and walking I have been doing the Alexander Technique. I have learned to have a bit wider stance and gait for better balance. My posture has also improved, I use to look downwards when I walked, but I walk more erect now. Slowly I have learned the proper way to pick things up, get in and out of chairs, sit, etc. It has been difficult breaking poor body mechanic habits. I would have never figured out these changes on my own. I am hopeful these measures help in preventing falls.

I am not living well with osteoporosis. I have had 2 falls recently and broke major bones. I was unaware I had fragile bones until the first fall tat occurred during a tennis game. I broke my femur. Dr told me my bones are fragile. While recovering from this break I fell on my kitchen floor and broke my elbow. I am awaiting surgery now and am so worried that I may never be able to play tennis again. Sports has been such a feel good activity my whole life. It isn’t only the sport but doing it with people I have grown to like so much over the years. I neglected to do a regularly bone density 2 yrs ago because of covid. Now look at the mess I am in!

@mklam maybe you could look into tai chi, which is also done with a community of people. I also did Nia, a low impact form of dance. Just thoughts. I have fractures too. Things do get better but they don't always go back to where they were, just to a different place that can also be enjoyable. Tymlos has brought some of my confidence back but I accept a certain level of fragility 🙂 Good luck!

I have gotten better with the use of Low Intensity Vibration Plate
and elinating any rxs or ailments that draw on calcium reserved plus micronutrients and good diet

I actually have the bone disease called Paget’s disease. My name is James Williams a retired San Jose Fire fighter. I was diagnosed with the disease about a month ago with a lot of bloodwork and tests. I do not have bone disease in my family and I was wondering if there is someone out there who has the disease and can tell me how are they dealing with it?

Hi James, my name is Regina, I was diagnosed with paget's by accident. I had a problem with my right hip, thought it was arthritis, X-ray showed paget's in my left femur. I was put on meds right away which was okay, but the original problem was my right hip. Long story short, I found out it's a European disease, mainly British, Scottish descendent and some other areas. It affects men more than women. Being black, it came as a surprise, but having Scottish descendent I was able to point a finger. It is a heredity thing, therefore, I was surprised because I had never heard of it before and knowing previous family members was out of the question. I'm presently learning more about it, I do not know how long my bones were growing in my left leg, but I have noticed my left leg is bigger than my right left (one fat, one skinny), I do not like it. I have an upcoming appointment and I want to get to the bottom of this, I do not want to go walking and suddenly fall due to a fracture femur. We can exchange info since we are both new to this.

I count myself extremely lucky at 71, my most recent DXA showed good bone strength.
So why am I posting here?

Because at least 3 generations of my Mom's family live or lived with moderate to severe osteoporosis, and it could certainly happen to me. So for the past 4 years, I have closely followed the discussions about bone health on Connect, and learned I might not be doing enough to stay healthy.

Now, I am working with my PCP to make sure I am getting effective calcium. I am eating more protein, walking more and trying to figure out what weight/resistance training might work for me. In order to protect my arthritic hands, wrists and elbows, lifting free weights, or even using most machines is not possible.
Suggestions, anyone?

Calcium citrate plus magnesium and vitamin d as recommended by my primary. 600 MG. I also drink milk, eat cheese and greens. No extra vitamin d unless stuck inside in deep winter.

Loren Feldman MD has established a wonderful series of 12 yoga postures for “normal “ bone density as well as for osteopenia and osteoporosis . There are you tubes and also a book.
