Post-Foot Surgery Complications

Posted by alexhinlee @alexhinlee, Jan 11, 2019

Hello, my name is Alex Lee. I had surgery on my foot on December 17, 2018(it is now January 11, 2019), involving general anesthesia. On my left-great toe, I had my EHL Tendon lengthened, along with an extra bone taken out, underneath my great-left toe. They put a pin through the top of my great-left toe down. Im in a cast with wrapping around the toe, and can not put any pressure whatsoever ever on the foot. About a week after surgery I have been getting very dizzy at times and my blood pressure bottoms out, and makes me feel like I'm going to pass out. I have fell many times due to the dizziness, and at times accidentally put pressure on that foot. A doctor diagnosed me with Syncope Episodes. When I get dizzy, then comes along with sweating and vomiting. I had one of the episodes at school and was escorted out of the classroom. I have had an EKG done, which had normal results, along with blood tests, that showed no infection. I am very confused, along with my doctors. Can someone please help. Thank you.

Hi @alexhinlee and welcome to Connect. It must be worrying to have these symptoms after surgery.

I wanted to introduce you to fellow Connect members @debbraw and @ellerbracke have both had surgery and may be able to help you figure out what else could be the cause, and can offer support.

Back to you @alexhinlee How is the pain for your foot been so far? Is it only painful when you put pressure on it or is it always hurting?

Thank you so much! I dont really have any pain in my foot. I did the first few days but after that, there was none. I did get blood drawn for infection and they said I had no infection and that my white count levels were normal.

@alexhinlee : I was mentioned by the moderator for having had recent surgery (TKR), but I can’t really comment on what’s going on with you. Other than a SINGLE unexplained problem with sudden blood pressure drop (81/47) 26 hours after surgery (paradoxically I had just collected all my belongings and was sitting down to sign discharge papers!!!), no circulatory problems since. Hope someone else can be more helpful.

@alexhinlee I just read your post After I had surgery I just didn't feel right so Dr kept me in hospital another day did blood work and found out I was anemic my blood pressure was also low so he sent me home on iron pills that brought my RBC,s back up have you asked Dr about the Iron count in your labwork. What you describe could also be coming from your ears suggestion, maybe an appointment with a Ear Dr would give you some clue.Good luck

After TKR, dressed ready to go home and passed out, blood pressure 50/30. Sent me to cardiac ward, hooked up to EKG overnight no sign of heart problems. Again dressed ready to go home another episode. Finally diagnosed as Vasovagal Syncope. Another one after going home, scared my wife and she called 911. No problem since then. Good Luck.

@sleepygirl: Looks like I am not as unique as I thought. As mentioned above: dressed, all packed up, signing discharge papers, and passing out. ONE episode only, but glad it happened while still in hospital.

First I want to comment I love and respect my podiatrist. I am just 65, scared and need advice. Please help! f
1st picture: 3 or 4 years ago: failed bunion surgery so big toe fell approximately 45 degrees dislocating three other toes.
I went to a new doc who said he would not operate on my foot until I got back surgery and walk 1 mile, so I forced myself to walk the mile and then changed doctors again. Best thing I did.
2nd picture 2 years ago: She performed surgery on my foot fusion of big toe and put pins on all the others. I thought I was on the road to recovery but my big toe continues to hurt.
3rd picture current: Now the top of my big is moving again and smashing my second and third toe toe again. My second toe has been operated on so much it is now shorter than my big toe and holding on by a=a stand. My third toe is moving over the second toe and my 4th toe is hurting quite a bit. Actually, they all hurt and I am having trouble walking. I used to walk two or three miles a day and currently that is impossible. I miss it.
4. I love my current doctor but not sure if she can help me.
I have severe scoliosis, (one neurosurgeon wanted to put a rod in my back and I said no but did get a fusion on one outside the curve from another doctor. He too, said I would probably need the "big" operation in the near future.), two smashed disks but they cannot fix them because they are inside the curve. osteoporosis, RA, and severe OA throughout my spine.
I will attempt to attach pictures but I am not so good at going from an iPhone to a windows laptop.
